I'm not a fan of guns myself, but my 12 year old likes to watch Top Shot - so we watch it together, and we get chance to discuss the sportsmanship side of it - the champion target shooters, etc. He has friends who hunt, but he has no interest in killing animals, thank goodness.

He said that before Heller, too.

I like his inclusive take on this; getting gun owners involved in pushing for this.

http://apps.washingtonpost.com/g/documents/politics/gun-violence-reduction-executive-actions/244/

The President’s plan includes: (1) closing background check loopholes to keep guns out of dangerous hands; (2) banning military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and taking other common-sense steps to reduce gun violence; (3) making schools safer; and (4) increasing access to mental health services. Highlights of this comprehensive plan include:
While no law or set of laws will end gun violence, it is clear that the American people want action. If even one child’s life can be saved, then we need to act. Now is the time to do the right thing for our children, our communities, and the country we love.

 Require criminal background checks for all gun sales.
 Take four executive actions to ensure information on dangerous individuals is available to the background check system.
 Reinstate and strengthen the assault weapons ban.
 Restore the 10-round limit on ammunition magazines.
 Protect police by finishing the job of getting rid of armor-piercing bullets.
 Give law enforcement additional tools to prevent and prosecute gun crime.
 End the freeze on gun violence research.
 Make our schools safer with more school resource officers and school counselors, safer climates, and better emergency response plans.
 Help ensure that young people get the mental health treatment they need.
 Ensure health insurance plans cover mental health benefits.

speech condensed by me-
1. universal background checks for purchases from dealers and private sellers. (common sense/70% of NRA mems. agree)

2. assault weapons ban/ magazine limits (thanks Reagan! listen to the police and citizens!)

3. penalties for breaking sales laws/BATF director Todd Jones

4. more police (also done by Clinton)

5. hunters/ sportsmen / respect 2nd amendment/ keeps guns away from criminals

6. calls out NRA...says their BS is NOT TRUE, but designed to "gin up fear".

7. asks for help from responsible gun owners in conservative states and everyday citizens

8. calls out congress with the kid's letter- nice.

9. freedom/ rights/ RESPONSIBILITIES to society. very good. life liberty + happiness.

10. wow, what an ending.

it's amazing, i still get stunned by the fact we have an actual HUMAN BEING for president...

Anyone who's been paying attention since 2008 knew all along Obama wanted all of these gun-control initiatives passed. Whether or not he gets them is another story, but nobody should be saying that they didn't anticipate this.
