http://thinkprogress.org/politics/2013/01/27/1500491/sheriff-gunspolice-911/Cop is basically saying because of lay-offs we don't have the man power so it is your duty to protect you and yours.
HOWEVER he doesn't say in the article that even if you are following his suggestion IF you shot and kill someone innocence than he'll be more than happy to see you get a nice comfy small room to live in for life.

PeaceNikki
(27,985 posts)But thanks for your concern with my grammatical integrity!
sylvi
(813 posts)But here it is for your benefit:
vig·i·lan·te/ˌvɪdʒəˈlænti/ Show Spelled [vij-uh-lan-tee]
noun
1. a member of a vigilance committee.
2. any person who takes the law into his or her own hands, as by avenging a crime.
Protecting oneself or others from imminent harm is not taking the law into your own hands, it's exercising the natural right of defense.
I know definitions and stuff are just "distractions" to some anti-2A people, but if one expects to be taken seriously in a discussion it helps to know that words mean things.
PeaceNikki
(27,985 posts)One who takes or advocates the taking of law enforcement into one's own hands.
A vigilante is an individual or group who undertakes law enforcement without legal authority.
Fun!!
sylvi
(813 posts)It is a natural right, and natural rights are not contingent upon law. Even they were, your own definition, "without legal authority" negates your argument, since people do have the legal authority to defend themselves.

(16,201 posts)Sure, they tried to argue otherwise and lie. But neither was defending in the classic sense. Zimmerman was the attacker, not the defender.
Reading this sub thread, you seemed to imply (multiple times) that someone fighting their attacker was a vigilante. People defend themselves from direct attack with many weapons, of which guns is one. Store clerks, as a subset, have used guns, brooms, cans, hostess cakes (throwing them and distracting robber), and fists to defend against violent attackers. If someone breaks into a home and attacks a family, they are justified to use whatever is at hand to defend themselves.
And that is on people's minds here in CT - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheshire,_Connecticut,_home_invasion_murders

If you support sheriffs in and around your county making these statements, whatever. This is my neighboring county and where people I love live and work. first off I don't see an overabundance of people claiming that more people should be armed to the teeth, I do see that every time any 2A supporter tries to protect that freedom, then the anti 2A people start claiming that that person wants to go to the extreme by saying "arm everyone to the teeth" this shows that you can't actually rebut anything we are saying because all you can do is make outlandish remarks. (13,992 posts)Clarke is in a semi-permanent feud with the Milwaukee County Board, and he's taken to making increasingly outrageous statement to the media (he's also something of a media whore).
Clarke is pissed because he had to cut 42 officers. He says people are less safe because of that. Here's why David Clarke is full of shit (OK, it's really one of several reasons):
There were 106,936 violent and property crimes committed in Milwaukee County last year. Of those, all but 57 of them were handled by municipal police departments. The MKE County Sherrif responded to 0.20% of all crimes in the county. The Sherrif's Department core function are staffing the County Jail, managing the bailiff system in the County Courts, and pulling over speeders on the freeway system. That's it. Tell me how more guns are going to make a difference.
What a douche...
