If you are not Terrified yet, You should Be...This is out of Control!

Gun Control Agenda Is Launching White Paranoid Extremists to Prepare for Armed Revolution

Peel back the code word of "defending" America and you have a treasonous movement in the works.

The battle over gun control has exposed a truth the mainstream media is apparently too shy to mention: A bunch of far-right, white, mostly Southern, paranoid extremists are preparing for armed revolution and apocalypse. They speak treason: literally.

They are preparing to "defend" America from America with arsenals of weapons and stockpiles of ammunition. Their "enemy" is everyone in America not like them.

They think the world is ending and/or that the government is out to get them. That doesn’t mean it will happen. But expect violence and assassinations. Their ideology is made up of equal parts racism, evangelical Christian fascination with the “end times,” hatred of President Obama, resentment of the “Old “South” variety and a Fox News/Glenn Beck/Rush Limbaugh version of world history.

SNIP:

“Every demographic and political trend that helped to reëlect Barack Obama runs counter to the [South’s] self-definition:…The Solid South speaks less and less for America and more and more for itself alone… Solidity has always been the South’s strength, and its weakness. The same Southern lock that once held the Democratic Party now divides the Republican Party from the socially liberal, fiscally moderate tendencies of the rest of America… The South’s vices—‘violence, intolerance, aversion and suspicion toward new ideas’—grow particularly acute during periods when it is marginalized and left behind. An estrangement between the South and the rest of the country would bring out the worst in both—dangerous insularity in the first, smug self-deception in the second.”

Dear God, the NRA and both Fox and Rush have whipped this into a frenzy. This is not about a few bad guys with guns as the NRA would have us believe. This is a very large movement, a Treasonous one. This is Insainity. What happened to America?

the well armed compounds originally came from the South because they liked the fact that the locals believe in minding their own business. Even their fellow southerners found them too extreme so they left for greener pastures up in the woods. Trust me the locals in those places don't really like them either.

and you are spot on. Hate, fear and all those things IS their religion. Some thought that multiplication in mass quantities was the answer but it has become clear over the last couple decades that that plan has backfired, on a number of levels. So the next tactic is to just get down right nasty. they don't hole up in bunkers so much, although there are some, they just take over entire small communities and run off whomever they see as a threat. You know, a certain sect are so into the prepper thing, as a religious practice, they are mandated by the church of their choice to have a nuclear bomb shelter and two years' worth of food supplies in it for the apocalypse... and they have a doomsday clock ticking as well.

It is something to be concerned about, and they are so whacked out about Obama being president that they see it as an abomination unto their god. the world is surely coming to an end and they aim to see that it does. They are all over the country and they are dumb as dirt when it comes to blind faux patriotism and no clue as to what the Constitution actually says. And there's a Mrs. Lanza in every county, their kids might not be total blow it cases but there are plenty of arsenals in single mom homes.

Those who do have hiding places aren't content to just keep to themselves anymore, like that freeper in Alabama with that child hostage, they are so wound up that they have to act out like that guy. They are so scared that they might be wrong that they simply cannot handle it... especially after this past election didn't pan out like they wanted, they thought they were outsmarting we stupid libruls and 'virnmentalists and fokes wuth a ejumacashun...

Yes, be wary... fear is useless. We need to be diligent in making sure that this country retains its essence.

Four men arrested in Toccoa terror plot

y Merritt Melanconmerritt.melancon@onlineathens.com – published Tuesday, November 1, 2011

The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested four Northeast Georgia men Tuesday, disrupting a domestic terror plot in which the men planned to manufacture ricin gas and distribute it in several major U.S. cities.

The men also were plotting to attack at least one federal government building in Atlanta with explosives, as punishment for what they considered “treasonous” activities, according to a news release issued by the Department of Justice.

Agents with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force had been investigating the men, all members of a militia group, since the spring, according to the news release. Their arrests came just days before one of the men planned to manufacture the ricin at his home in Toccoa.

Frederick Thomas, 73, of Cleveland; and Toccoa residents Dan Roberts, 67; Randy Adams, 65; and Samuel Crump, 68, were taken into federal custody Tuesday.

“These defendants, who are alleged to be part of a fringe militia group, are charged with planning attacks against their own fellow citizens and government,” said U.S. Attorney Sally Quillian Yates. “While many are focused on the threat posed by international violent extremists, this case demonstrates that we must also remain vigilant in protecting our country from citizens within our own borders who threaten our safety and security.”

ERIC RUDOLPH CHARGED IN CENTENNIAL OLYMPIC PARK BOMBING

Also Charged with Bombings at North Atlanta Clinic and Atlanta Nightclub

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Federal authorities today charged Eric Robert Rudolph with the fatal bombing two years ago at Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park, as well as the 1997 bombings at an Atlanta area health clinic and a nightclub, the Southeast Bomb Task Force announced.

In a criminal complaint filed today in Atlanta, together with a sealed affidavit, the Justice Department charged that the 32 year old resident of Murphy, North Carolina, was responsible for the Centennial Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta on July 27, 1996, the double bombing at the Sandy Springs Professional Building in north Atlanta on January 16, 1997, and the double bombing at The Otherside Lounge in Atlanta on February 21, 1997. An arrest warrant was issued today for his arrest on these charges.

Rudolph, who authorities had previously sought for questioning in connection with the three bombings, was charged in February 1998, with the bombing at the New Woman All Women Health Care Clinic in Birmingham, Alabama on January 29. That bomb killed Birmingham police officer Robert Sanderson, and severely injured the clinic's head nurse, Emily Lyons.

"We are going to keep searching until we find him," said Attorney General Janet Reno in an announcement made today at the Justice Department.

Today's criminal complaint charges Rudolph with five counts of malicious use of an explosive in violation of federal law.

The first bombing incident occurred at Centennial Olympic Park, where thousands of visitors had gathered on the ninth day of the 1996 Summer Olympics. The bomb, placed near the main stage in the park, injured more than 100 people, many of them permanently, and killed Alice Hawthorne, a mother who had traveled to Atlanta with her daughter to see the Olympics. A Turkish cameraman, Melih Uzunyol, died of a heart attack responding to the blast.

"The fatal bombing in Atlanta was a terrorist attack aimed at thousands of innocent persons gathered at the Olympic Park," said Louis Freeh, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). "Within the FBI's Domestic Terrorism Program, there is no higher priority than the capture of Eric Robert Rudolph."

The second bombing incident was a double bombing that occurred at the Sandy Springs Professional Building in the Atlanta area in January 1997. The first bomb exploded at the back of the building, which houses the Atlanta Northside Family Planning Service, causing significant damage. The second bomb exploded in the parking lot about one hour later, as medical personnel, firefighters, police and other law enforcement officers worked to secure the scene and evacuate people from the area. Shrapnel from the bomb injured four people, and more than 50 others suffered blast effects.

"This bomber placed secondary bombs designed to kill and maim rescuers, paramedics, firefighters and police officers who rushed to the scene to help," said John W. Magaw, Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). "He didn't care who they were."

Finally, the third bombing incident occurred less than one month after the Sandy Springs bombings, at the Otherside Lounge, a nightclub in Atlanta. In that bombing, five people were injured when a bomb exploded behind the nightclub. A second explosive device was discovered, and the area was cleared, before it exploded. The second device had been placed on the side of the lounge, where medical personnel, firefighters, police and law enforcement agents would respond.

Oh, and the Confederacy, the KKK and the Civil Rights era and all of that. It's pretty hard to live down a reputation like that, but IMHO, it's more geographic than anything else.

Just a lot more land in those states than many other states, and less population, so they stand out. That and the history. Having grown up there, I was treated to all the traditional things, although my family and I didn't agree with what the seeming 'majority' did.

It was open and not hidden at all for many years and even celebrated. It's had a resurgence in the last few decades. But at times, I wonder if those of us didn't approve and worked against it in a positive way or refused to listen to certain types, were just in denial about it.

Since the media no longer punishes the kind of behavior we're discussing here, doesn't treat it as anti-American, it has grown. I'm sure you don't mean to pick on the South, but you might edit that word to save some feelings here. But the truth is that you are right, these same areas under GOP control are the ones calling for leaving the Union, arming themselves, hating everything that most of us here consider reasonable and positive.

It is an unpleasant thing, yet we will still encourage our breathren in those areas. They are the ones who are the most challenged. We don't want to lose the South from the Union, although the GOP would likely welcome that. Because they are related to all of us, but the media has driven them crazy.

http://newamericamedia.org/2012/05/hate-groups-rise-against-blacks-obama.php

There are 65 known white supremacist groups in the state of Georgia – racist organizations that believe a black man, President Barack Obama, has no place in the White House.

And the hating is getting worse.

Take Georgia bar owner Patrick Lanzo, a hate-filled resident who claims that he’s not a racist but insists on plastering the N-word on a large roadside sign outside his Georgia Peach Oyster Bar to describe his political views.

"I do not support the nigger in the White House," the sign reads.

There is nothing illegal about Lanzo’s racist message. The U.S. Secret Service doesn’t appear to be investigating since Lanzo hasn’t actually threatened the president. The NAACP has protested Lanzo’s sign and Paulding County officials say there is nothing they can do about it since Lanzo isn’t breaking any laws.

And, after all, we do live in a country that supports freedom of speech.

But Lanzo has clearly crossed the line and his bigoted political statement will only fire-up the racists in Georgia who are hell bent on spewing hate and disrespecting Obama every chance they get. Lanzo and his warped crew don’t care about Obama’s call for unifying America; they aren’t interested in the president’s mission to care for all Americans – they just want Obama out of the White House and they’re tired of seeing his black face on CNN every day.

"As the Southern Poverty Law Center notes, the number of so-called patriot groups surged after President Obama was first elected president. “The swelling of the Patriot movement since that time has been astounding,” the report said. “From 149 groups in 2008, the number of Patriot organizations skyrocketed to 512 in 2009, shot up again in 2010 to 824, and then, last year, jumped to 1,274."

I was going to post a link to their HateWatch Blog. It's definitely a good site to watch what they watch.

I find it odd that there are so many here who poo poo the idea that these right wing extremist groups are a threat. That's exactly the same reaction republicans had when DHS's report was released, warning us of this growing menace.

Now that gun regulation is in the forefront, it is all too common to now hear the 2nd Amendment was created to defend against a tyrannical government. This ramped up extreme rhetoric, IMHO, is certainly something we should pay close attention to.

A Washington State man allegedly sent a profanity-filled tirade to the FBI threatening President Barack Obama’s life and daring them to come to his home.

When authorities took him up on his offer, they found him armed with an arsenal, KING-TV reported.

Anton Caluori, 31, is reported to have sent the email Tuesday to a general FBI address.

“I will kill the president!!!!!! ‘I’ Don't give a F-ck... But You Know That!!!!” it read in part, according to the Seattle Weekly. “You Have 7 days...get me to Alcatraz now...you can't afford to call my bluff... Dieing Isn't frightening...it's peaceful...you will see...”

Caluori also allegedly promised a “Cop killing spree” and gave his home address in Federal Way, writing “COME GET ME.”

Police and a Secret Service agent went to the apartment he shares with his mother, and he answered the door with one hand behind his back, according to KING. When cops ordered him to show his hands, he revealed a pump-action shotgun.

He also reportedly wore a bandoleer laden with ammunition, with a large knife attached.

Caluori allegedly pointed the shotgun at the cops and they wrestled him to the ground.

And there was the one who was planning to bomb the MLK commemoration in the eastern part of the state in Spokane:

Report: Feds Make Arrest In Spokane MLK Day Bomb Attempt

http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/03/report_feds_make_arrest_in_spokane_mlk_day_terror.php

More recently, a WA man plotted with others to kill Obama and stage a coup. Sheshe, you should read all of this thread, to see the sort of malignant forces we are dealing with:

Leader of Army Plot to Assassinate Obama Apparently Attended the '08 Republican Convention as a Page

US troops plotted to kill Obama

http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014208925#post37

There were threats to kill a senator. I downloaded as many people did the charging papers showing the depraved, foul-mouthed threats he was making against her and her whole family:

Man arrested over threats to kill senator (Patty Murray)

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4334278

Man arrested for threats against Dem rep (Jim McDermott)

Woman Arrested For Making E-Mailed Threats To Governor (WA)

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1691547

In everyone of these cases they were against them for supporting Obama, or other elements of the party platform, and threatened repeatedly to kill their entire families. There are a lot more. I am sure the Secret Service has a record of threats. These people travel from state to state. I don't think any other country has ever had anything like this to deal with, never.

Why some are surprised at the pushback is beyond me.

Suddenly we have a president and his allies pushing vague goals targeting Americans' constitutional right to bear arms.

People aren't going to stand for it. It will go nowhere. And it will lose us seats, maybe control of the Senate, in 2014.

Simply lumping all Americans who appreciate and cherish our constitution, and shoving all 2nd Amendment supporters, many being Democrats, under the wacko-right umbrella serves no good end.

You can scratch your head and slice and dice and whip bits of info into the the smoothie you want it to be, but it doesn't change the clear reality.

I was a Democrat when I came to DU in 2001 as a lurker, a Democrat when I joined in 2002 as a vocal member, and I'll be a Democrat when I leave DU or, if it should happen, I get shown the door. So please don't respond to my post as if I'm some sleeper shill for the NRA or some other such ridiculousness. These views are my views, and from where I sit, are glaringly obvious.

My biggest problem is that it is highly likely that, unlike you, the big majority of people we are talking about being willing to engage in violence with our government - WITHOUT SEEKING THE ASSENT OF THE REST OF US IN SO DOING - are also extremely likely to have assumed almost absolutely NO other civic responsibilities, to be fully informed and active, for how that government got to be what it is - AND - very likely are also engaged right now in making matters much worse by supporting vote suppression and gerrymandering, all at the point of a gun. See how some of us feel like, if not you, your cohort is fucking with our rights? At least with our government, we have the hypothetical possibility of some form of control. Not so with a bunch of un-regulated volunteers carrying assault weapons.

You are probably informed and steeped in the whole history of this country, but I'd be willing to bet big money that you and those who are like you in that are a minute fraction of those who are advocating for unregulated assault weapon ownership and somekind of 2nd Amendment "right" to try to overthrow the government of this country without seeking the assent of billions of other people whom that will affect extremely seriously, which makes it not a right at all, but rather a PRIVILEGE acquired from the potential for ultimate violence & power, a.k.a. fascism.

I respectfully request your thoughts please.

I get very tired of all sides, who stand on the sidelines and resist learning about government, just throw around slogans and attack it, which leads to the fascists taking over. There is no chaos that leads to egalitarian paradise without seriously working out the means, which many will not do as they think it's too slow. People and resources will be managed - if we do not take steps to let them fall into the hands of those who do us the most harm, they will wait for us to stumble. Apathy and cynicism are as much a danger to democracy and supply as great an aid to fascism as the 'don't tax me or don't burden me with regulation' libertarians who are all for themselves.

71. So many Americans are having their rights f***ed with that your argument does not hold.
Fri Feb 1, 2013, 12:38 AM
Feb 2013

The idea that Americans are just protecting their rights doesn't work. For at least the last 20 years the federal government has been removing American's rights, and we haven't done a damn thing about it. Free Speech is disappearing (think 'Free Speech Zones'). Amendment VI to the Constitution can be bypassed whenever the government wants (Fair and speedy trial, knowing the charges against you, facing your accusers.) Amendment IV is totally scrapped in favor of governmental seizure of property if your are 'suspected' of having something to do with drugs - and then the burden of proof is on you to prove you didn't have anything to do with drugs.

The only right that all these so-called patriots are getting exercised about is the 'right to bear arms' with absolutely NO regulation whatsoever. And, even then, there are limitations on they type of 'arms' that private citizens can own. No matter how badly you want one, and no matter how much money you have, you aren't going to be able to go buy your own suitcase nuke, or patriot missile legally.

So why do people get so upset about background checks? Or registering guns? We have to register our cars, boats, airplanes. If we want to drive a car, we are required to carry liability insurance so that if we harm someone or damage their property with our car, our insurance will cover the damages. Why not require liability insurance on our guns?

Why are guns the one 'right' guaranteed in the Constitution that people go into a frenzy over? And don't tell me its to defend against government tyranny. When I ask 'what tyranny' no one has an answer. And, folks, I'm sorry to tell you, you are NOT going to prevail against the Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Marines. The government decides to take you out, one or two drones will do the job and all your high-powered semi-automatic weapons with their high-capacity magazines won't do you a damn bit of good.

And for anyone poised to defend Southern "honor": I was born and raised in the South. But I'd lived up North for long enough by that point that they heard the Yankee accent, and couldn't help themselves.

that DU apparently... modified, go get the "real list". Which does not have things on it like "clothing" "yogurt" "convenience stores" and "amusement park".

The list was enough before DU got ahold of it and added to it. The original post where the list was shown has a link in it, if you go to the link it has the actual list. Just as damning without all the bullshit add ons.

When I read it I commented about the stupidity of calling "yogurt" and "amusement park" and a bunch of other inanimate objects your enemies. It was so stupid I was about to post it on FB when I decided to go to the link. The list posted here and the list the NRA put out are not the same. Mind you the list the NRA put out is unreal, but modifying it and reposting it costs credibility for the gun control advocates.

They do a great job of making asses out of themselves, they don't need any "help".

As a gun owner who carries, and who owns a couple of AWs and high capacity mags, I know a number of gun owners, and yes I would have to say that most are RW.

A LOT of them are scared, and I cannot see them rising up and "doing something". Talk a good game? Hell, yes. Actually do something? I would have to call bullshit on that. I just do not see that many of them have the ability to size up real threats. They see almost everyone and everything as a threat, so they live in a cocoon.

The concern I have is that feeble minded dipshits, mostly influenced by O'Heckbaugh, will commit individual acts. Byron Williams comes to mind.

92. There are about a eighty-million or so firearms-owners in this country
Fri Feb 1, 2013, 01:19 PM
Feb 2013

There are about a eighty-million or so firearms-owners in this country. Collectively they own hundreds of millions of weapons. No one knows the exact numbers in either group, many gun owners keep that fact quiet, and an accounting for the number of weapons is and always will be impossible.

Of those eighty-million gun owners, about half are Democrats.

Approximately four-million gun owners are NRA members. They represent some of the more passionate gun rights activists. There are, however, MANY more who refuse to join the NRA because they do not want their names on any lists, and because they feel the NRA is too soft on gun rights. There are other gun rights groups as well, such as Gun Owners of America with 300,000 members. The GOA bills themselves as the "only no-compromise gun lobby," and they mean just that -- their members think the NRA is soft on gun control.

In any group of people, there are always some number that fall into the extremes in their beliefs. This is true whether we are talking about bowling, football, gun control, or gun rights. Most people fall somewhere in the middle, but some live out in the wilderness. If we assume that this number is somewhere between ONE and TEN PERCENT, the number of armed and potentially dangerous gun-rights advocates lies somewhere between eight-hundred-thousand and eight-million.

Let's make the numbers smaller.

If only one percent of NRA members fall into this category, we are still talking about forty-thousand people.

ONE guy was behind this, killing 169 people:

[img][/img]

ONE guy did this, killing 77 people:

[img][/img]

[img][/img]

These two men shared something in common, not only with each other, but with millions of gun-rights activists in this country: They see themselves as PATRIOTS.

Now understand, I am not equating the average gun-rights activist with these maniacs. That's as unfair as equating an Islamic suicide bomber with the religion of Islam. So no, I am not saying that even the passionate gun-rights activist is a mass-murdering sociopath. But it is from those ranks that these maniacs come. They are the radical fringe, so radical that even the most passionate militia member says "Whoa dude, you're freaking nuts."

None the less, there is danger. Not only from the lone lunatic, but because our own fringe, the radical gun-control advocates, are apparently determined to feed into the paranoia and hate these people already feel.

They see themselves as Patriotic Americans making a lonely stand against creeping statist government oppression. They see things like the Patriot Act, 9-11, domestic spying, secret prisons, torture, drones, and all that as further proof that the liberal oppressors are coming to get them and their guns. The GOP and their noise machine plays on this and fires them up. They exploded under Clinton, and now that another Democrat is in the White House they are back again -- and this time the Democrat is a "socialist radical marxist muslim" from Kenya! He even has a Muslim terrorist middle name. And he wants your guns!

Our most passionate and strident, right or wrong, want to do just tha -- they do want their guns. They are feeding into it.

So now for a splash of reality. NO ONE is going to take their guns. NO ONE is going to propose real gun control, and if they did it would never pass. Not because of the NRA and not even because of the USSC, it would never pass because the members of Congress voting on this imaginary bill aren't interested in getting killed. They don't want to see car bombs going off at your mall, they don't want to see random police officers and judges blown away on their front lawns. And they understand something that the gun-control fringe with their pictures of A-10's and Apaches, and their fantasies about the violent deaths of gun owners do not: none of those high-tech toys will stop even a single attack by some radical 'patriot' group. The outcome of any such attempt would be carnage on an unimaginable scale, and no one sane wants that.

So no, if you are on the gun-control fringe you are NEVER going to get the gun control you want. What you will get is disappointment, and as you continue to annoy and allienate Democratic gun-owners and second amendment advocates, lost elections. So my advice is simply this, and it is in no way reflective of my personal feelings about gun control:

If you are a serious and passionate gun-control advocate, if you want to repeal the second amendment and see gun owners as the enemy, do everyone a favor and take it down about twenty notches. You are not helping. Take whatever meaningless executive orders and feel-good legislation congress gives you, and call it a win.

How To Track Terrorists From Your Phone
Local law enforcement can now access terror watch lists used by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security on their smartphones.

By Jason Koebler
March 8, 2012 RSS Feed Print

Homeland Security and the FBI have long had digital surveillance programs track online presences of terrorist and hate groups—now, with the introduction of a new password-protected iPad and Android app, local law enforcement can have access to a similar list.

The Digital Terror + Hate app, released Tuesday by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish human rights organization that runs "Museums of Tolerance" in New York, Los Angeles and Jerusalem, features information on jihadists, white supremacists , anti-Semitic and other hate groups. It's a handheld version of the organization's annual digital terror and hate watch lists, which have been used by the Department of Homeland Security and other law enforcement organizations.

I was saying what I wanted to say, and hopefully in an easy to read understandable style. Taking what I said into consideration why would my personal desires for gun control be relevant? I will be blunt: meaningful gun control, with meaningful being anything which will have any real impact, is impossible at this time. It would not pass the House, it would not pass the Senate (even with filibuster reform), President Obama would not sign it, and the USSC would rule it unconstitutional.

In the meantime we are expending political capital and riling up a bunch of nutcases for little actual purpose. Gun violence sucks. ALL violence sucks. But we are not going to be able to address this issue with a chainsaw. We have to be smarter than that, and that's going to take two things:

A. It's going to take time.

B. It's going to take calm rational discussion and acceptance. We need to listen and understand the beliefs and concerns of firearms owners. They have to be a major part of the solution or they will damn sure become the problem.

In the meantime I would love to see us focus our attention onto issues that don't require constitutional amendments to advance. Things like ending fracking, ending NAFTA and other FTAs, strengthening unions, repairing our infrastruction, education reform, ending the ACA and replacing it with some form of single payer option, actually curbing banks and financial marauders, making a start on global warming, ending poverty, repairing our infrastructure, repairing our shredded safety net, taking care of the tens-of-millions of hungry families, taking care of our homeless, ending the damn wars, eliminating Patriot and domenstic spying, bringing our war criminals to justice.

You know, easy stuff that only requires a vote. Stuff that EVERYONE wants.

Again, thanks for reading!

94. An interesting piece by Dana Milbank
Fri Feb 1, 2013, 01:26 PM
Feb 2013
Wayne LaPierre, the National Rifle Association’s chief executive, arrived for his hearing on Capitol Hill in the organization’s trademark fashion: violently. When he and his colleagues stepped off the elevator in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Wednesday morning and found TV cameras waiting in the hallway, LaPierre’s bodyguards swung into action. One of them, in blatant violation of congressional rules, bumped and body-checked journalists out of the way so they couldn’t film LaPierre or question him as he walked.

“You don’t have jurisdiction here!” a cameraman protested as an NRA goon pushed him against a wall. After the melee, congressional officials informed the NRA officials that, in the halls of Congress, they had to follow congressional procedures — which prohibit manhandling.

(snip)

The NRA chief made all the well-known arguments against gun laws; he reminded senators that the founders didn’t want Americans to “live under tyranny,” and he agreed with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) that the proposed ban on assault weapons merely targets “cosmetic features” of guns. LaPierre also added the novel idea that people may need guns if they are “abandoned by their government if a tornado hits, if a hurricane hits.”

Most people don’t have such apocalyptic paranoia. But LaPierre’s job is to stir up the active minority who are frightened and resentful. “If you’re in the elite, you get bodyguards,” he told the senators. “You get high-cap mags with semiautomatics protecting this whole Capitol. The titans of industry get the bodyguards.” He said it’s only “the hardworking, law-abiding, taxpaying American that we’re going to make the least capable of defending themselves.”

Minutes after that denunciation of the well-protected elites, LaPierre rejoined his bodyguards, who were waiting in a back room.
