What is more dangerous than video games...

I have to admit that our son has some video games which have been targeted by many as being the very ones that are linked to violence. I do believe that excess use of these is not healthy. We do limit how much time he spends playing these role playing shooting games.

But when I listen to some talking about their absolute need for assault style weapons, I'm taken aback by how they think.

It's always about the tyrannical government, society breaking down into pure anarchy, and hordes of violent criminals breaking into your home while the police are so far away that you would be left helpless. In their eyes, it's a frightening world and either we should be armed to the teeth or we should be hiding behind the couch.

To me, this comes across as very frightening and I'm not sure if people who think like this should be armed. I think it's dangerous.

Based on the media you'd think there is a criminal rampage being fueled by guns, drugs, and a phantom tyrannical government. Everything from popular shows to the evening news... nothing but media images of cartels, shootings, crime and poverty. Look at sampling of the top ranking shows (Dexter, Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Criminal Minds, Walking Dead, CSI NY/LA/Miami, The Unit... ...). It's an all out assault against our sensibilities. Hey, if it bleeds it leads, right?

Nevermind that violent crime and gun homicides are achieving decades lows. The news and TeeVee stations need to get those rating and make more money. No, No, No... nevermind the statistics behind the curtains. And what is the product of years and years of this media mass assault? People feeling paranoid to the point that not one assault rifle remains in on the shelves at even 200% MSRP and people are even looking towards video games and violent music absolutely puzzled as to why things are so bad.

Relax people. Take a deep breath. Study the below chart and be at ease. Then spread the good news!

What is actually happening in the real world:

What mass media wants you to believe is happening:
