It is not about whether Hagel was prepared or not. No one could have answered the questions he was asked with a simple yes or no without inviting the wrath of every Republican on the Committee. But wait! He got that anyway!
The story the media is missing is how far the Republican Party has gone in its "partisanship" and hostility toward this President. If he cannot get Chuck Hagel, a moderate Republican, nominated, then what Democrat can get the job? Joe Lieberman?
The "spin" is that Hagel was somehow "unprepared" or not competent to hold the job because of some previous remarks. God forbid they find one comment from John McCain and each of these Senators and take them out of context in the same manner.
The partisan hostility of the Republicans must be noted.

(46,416 posts)out of him that played into and confirmed their public smears of him beforehand. They wanted him to say something anti-Israel, anti-Semite, soft on Iran, and would unilaterally disarm ourselves of all nukes. He avoided all of those traps, and instead said the opposite of all of those things, over and over, without contradicting himself, for eight fucking hours. They also wanted him to somehow wound Obama inadvertently by disagreeing with his policies, drive a wedge and exploit it--he didn't do that either, but reinforced that he agrees with Obama.

.@KatrinaNation LETS REVIEW: #Hagel expected tough questions pertaining to the position. He did NOT expect a #neocon mental torture session

(168 posts)out republican bullshit, batshit crapola. It is sickening that they are still doing the "both sides do it" when they factually do not.

(14,087 posts)I'm sick of their characterization of the republicans as people who are on top of anything. The republicans are vicious bullies who don't give a whack about the USA.

Both are equally culpable in that which he criticizes.
Can't have that. Not in public.

(47,501 posts)McCain and others have been talking about it for months, ever since his nomination was considered.
Yes, they were nasty. McCain trying to compensate for who knows what.
But the White House should have prepared him just like... they prepared Obama for the second and third debates.
And I think that had Hagel continued to talk through McCain tirade, saying something like: "Senator, if you will let me reply" perhaps Senator Levin would have pounded his gavel and intervened.
