Jimmy Lee Dykes Speaking Through Pipe With Negotiators In Kindergarten Kidnapping Case (Day 4)

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. — The standoff between police and a gunman accused of holding a kindergartner hostage in an underground bunker dragged into a fourth day on Friday, as authorities sought to continue delicate conversations with the man through a pipe and worked to safely end the tense situation.

The gunman shot a school bus driver to death Tuesday, grabbed a 5-year-old boy off the bus and slipped into an underground bunker on his property in rural Alabama, police said. There were signs the standoff could go on for some time: the shelter has electricity, food, TV, and police have delivered the boy's medication through a 4-inch-wide ventilation pipe leading to the bunker.

...

Dykes was known around the neighborhood as a menacing figure who neighbors said once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, threatened to shoot children for setting foot on his property and patrolled his yard at night with a flashlight and a firearm.

The chief confirmed that Dykes held anti-government views, as described by multiple neighbors: "He's against the government – starting with Obama on down."

I had wondered what had happened with this story. I literally can't imagine what the parents are going through, either...

3. Do they know if he has sexually molested the child? I assume he has kept children in the bunker

before or this was the first of many he intended to "keep."

Makes my blood run cold just to think about it.

And no evidence I'm aware of that he has kept other children in the bunker.

4. Will there ever be a way to legislate laws that make "bizarre" behavior illegal?

I don't see how, but common sense tells me that persons exhibiting behavior that falls outside the norm should be investigated and possibly (probably) restricted from getting gun permits. Problem is...whose definition of "outside the norm" would we use? I think if my neighbor built a bunker and patrolled that property carrying a flashlight and a firearm, I might think his/her behavior wasn't normal. Unless he had been harrassed or threatened by verified dangers. Then it might be reasonable.

How sad for this little boy...I hope the hostage situation is resolved without further violence.

I'm not sure why assault doesn't result in arrest and incarceration.

i really can't think of anything that can be done in this case right now other than to wait and hope the boy can be brought out alive.
