scientists to reveal results of richard III hunt

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/E/EU_BRITAIN_RICHARD_III?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2013-02-03-08-18-24

LONDON (AP) -- Has Britain's lost king been found?

On Monday, scientists will announce the results of tests conducted to determine whether a battle-scarred skeleton found under a municipal parking lot in central England belongs to 15th-century King Richard III, the last British monarch to die in combat.

The University of Leicester, which is leading the search, refuses to speculate on what the announcement will say. But archaeologists, historians and local tourism officials are all hoping for confirmation that the monarch's long-lost remains have been located.

So are the king's fans in the Richard III Society, set up to re-evaluate the reputation of a reviled monarch. Richard was immortalized in a play by William Shakespeare as a hunchbacked usurper who left a trail of bodies - including those of his two young nephews, murdered in the Tower of London - on his way to the throne.

If it is Richard, I wonder if they will re-inter him in Westminster Abbey. It's not unprecedented to bury enemies in close proximity. Elizabeth I is buried in the same crypt as her sister, Mary I. As I recall, Mary, Queen of Scots is in the same chapel area, too.

This is quite the fascinating story! Although, if BBC sitcoms have any bearing, he was murdered (and his headless body dragged around) by his nephew, Edmund.

Sir James Tyrell:
The tyrannous and bloody deed is done.
The most arch of piteous massacre
That ever yet this land was guilty of.
Dighton and Forrest, whom I did suborn
To do this ruthless piece of butchery,
Although they were flesh'd villains, bloody dogs,
Melting with tenderness and kind compassion
Wept like two children in their deaths' sad stories.
'Lo, thus' quoth Dighton, 'lay those tender babes:'
'Thus, thus,' quoth Forrest, 'girdling one another
Within their innocent alabaster arms:
Their lips were four red roses on a stalk,
Which in their summer beauty kiss'd each other.
A book of prayers on their pillow lay;
Which once,' quoth Forrest, 'almost changed my mind;
But O! the devil'—there the villain stopp'd
Whilst Dighton thus told on: 'We smothered
The most replenished sweet work of nature,
That from the prime creation e'er she framed.'
Thus both are gone with conscience and remorse;
They could not speak; and so I left them both,
To bring this tidings to the bloody king.
And here he comes.
All hail, my sovereign liege!

by far

The documentary "Looking for Richard" covers AL Pacino rehearsing and planning to stage the play. Fascinating.
