In 1989, then President George H.W. Bush issued an executive order halting the importation of some semi-automatic firearms after a mass school shooting Stockton, California. He based his executive order on the 1968 Gun Control Act and used it to ban the shipment of what could be considered “assault weapons” unless they were used for sporting purposes. (Question: Did the free republic cease to exist then?)

George W Bush

They know their own people and realize that if they were in control and someone did something they didn't like they'd have no compunction about kicking down the door and locking everyone up.
They assume that if they would do that, everyone else would too.

Essentially they want the guns to protect themselves from themselves.
I wish they'd follow it out to it's logical conclusion and all shoot themselves.

This should be repeated over and over whenever they wet their panties in fear of President Obama taking their guns. I also point out that President Obama has done nothing but loosen gun laws.
