Beyonce kept her top on during the halftime show but Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco's excitement over winning the Super Bowl included dropping some swear words on national TV.
At the end of a long game that included a power outage that stopped play for about 30 minutes, a happy Flacco screamed some expletives. He was close enough to some microphones to be heard quite clearly by viewers at home.
Flacco's enthusiasm would probably be classified as a fleeting expletive. The Federal Communications Commission in the past has gone after networks for similar incidents.
The FCC hasn't been successful in those efforts. Last year, the Supreme Court tossed an FCC fine of Fox for swearing by Cher and Nicole Richie that made it on the air during awards shows. However, the court's ruling does not stop the FCC from continuing to pursue fines for fleeting expletives.

In that FCC v. Fox case from 2012, the SCOTUS upheld the FCC indecency policy while reversing the indecency fines on the technicality that FCC lacked a "fleeting expletive" policy at the time the 2002 and 2003 Billboard Music Awards aired; the policy took effect only since 2004.

(34,582 posts)my wife and I watch High Chaparall re-runs. On commercials they say it is Parent Television Council approved, yet at least one person gets shot each show. Violence is okay, swearing or sex is not. The puritans are crazy.

(6,278 posts)He wasn't being interviewed, he was just exclaiming to a teammate immediately after the end of the game that it was "fucking awesome." Joe Biden would have approved

(28,158 posts)He'd just won the superbowl for crying out loud! It's going to be harder and harder for the prudes to keep censoring the least little curse word in this country. It's just become too mainstream anymore. For most people they have to be being careful not to let something "inappropriate" slip anymore.

(135,425 posts)The prudes complaining about it were probably screaming at the "fucking" TV during some of the more exciting plays during the game, anyway, so I'm sure, if the kids were even still watching, that the word wasn't new to them!

It's common and a part of most peoples vernacular in this country anymore. At some point they're going to lose their war with language. Too many people simply are not offended by such things anymore.

(28,158 posts)Now that I've seen the clip I can say, Flacco's going to be fading the heat for a comment he thought was made to his team mates in private. It's not even as if he in anyway said it where he thought people were going to overhear.
I'll guarantee you're right, too. Many of the homes where the people most offended by this slip live were witness to this very word being used in them tonight during the game.

(6,278 posts)How many seconds of Super Bowl advertising will cover any fines?
Flacco earned that by putting his ass on the line, getting chased by guys weighing as much as 300 pounds trying to plant his head into the turf. CBS brass are just siphoning profits off the sweat of others.

(28,158 posts)I'm now feeling sorry for him. He was surrounded by his team and I'm sure thought their words were between just them. He just hit a major high point in his sport and career, and now he's going to have do deal with something as trivial as that bringing negative media attention on him.

I think the shit shouldn't be counted because it was uttered in prayer.
