Taking a page from the lucrative 'naming rights' sold to corporations for various sports arenas (Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans is one example), the House of Representatives voted today to sell the naming rights of the U.S. capitol building to ExxonMobil and Citibank corporations.
The senate is expected to overwhelmingly approve the house bill on Tuesday.
The deal will bring in approximately 380 million dollars a year into the congressional budget.
The monies will be divided proportionately among members of congress, depending on years of service.
In a press conference, House Majority Leader John Boehner said "It's time for congress to come clean and spread the wealth. I think it has been very unfair for individual members to make private deals with various lobbying groups. This bill will benefit all of our members."
As word of this has spread on capitol hill, other government agencies are considering similar moves.
The Department of Transportation is reportedly in 'naming' negotiations with Boeing and Airbus.
It's expected that this will be subject to a completive bid.
The FBI is said to be talking to arms manufacturers Glock, Bushmaster, Remington, and Smith & Wesson to rename the J. Edgar Hoover office building.
The Social Security Administration is rumored to be in "unofficial talks" with Charles Schwab, Merrill-Lynch, Ameritrade, and Fidelity Investments.
Large coal and oil corporations have also approached the Environmental Protection Agency.
When we questioned the EPA, they had "No comment".
