The Post Office...

yes, I got annoyed when the price of stamps went up, and still do. But my use of the PO went way down. I pay my bills online, and use the PO sparingly, not because of a reason, but because I no longer count on them. I do get mail delivered, and am very much appreciative of that. Can I live w/o Saturday delivery? Sure. Will lack of work hurt people? Yes.

I don't have an answer, but am looking for opinions.

1. It's a nightmare for many people as service gets cuts back

so many rely on the Post Office for their home business and an example - send a dvd first class mail with USPS and it's aroun 1.50 - now with Fedex it's 8 dollars or similar.

Seniors and homeless use the Post Office and need to walk -- central Post Offices in many towns are being shut and now those people and all of us have to drive to more obscure locations.

It's all being done in a brutal manner due to the pressure.

Cities cannot save their historic Post Office buildings either because they are Federal.

Going to the highest bidder, Starbucks will replace them

and the repukes want to kill the Post Office even though it is profitable and needed

People wait for their checks, no Saturday arrival, no food

From what I've read, it's not been profitable.
So can't timelines change?

Read other threads, it's all bs pushed through to prefund the PO retirement for 75 years.

No uproar over this and we lose a profitable dem supporting organization

by those that want to privatize them. I rely on my PO and support them 100%...I want them to continue all services and even expand. In rural areas we rely on the PO and know our carriers personally. They provide good service and pay for themselves.

But rural areas and a manufactured crisis. Catch big Eddie on the repeat. But serious, if they did not have to prefund the retirement fund for the next 75 years in ten, they would have had 1.5 Billion in surplus in 2012.

5. My opinion? Saturday delivery isn't a big issue.

However, the constitution decrees that there should be a national post office. That's a fact of life.

The post office is necessary; privatizing mail delivery is expensive and won't work. Why? Not only because it will be outrageously expensive, but because courier companies use the national post office to get to out of the way places where getting personnel is impractical for those companies.......the profit motive thing, y'see.

The whole thing is insanity, and it's standard GOP garbage. They're basically trying to steal the pension money and privatize the service; why isn't it commonly understood that this is a service mandated by the constitution?

Having to fund retiree health benefits for 75 years is a ridiculous, onerous burden that no other organization has to bear. This is so easily solvable, yet Congress and the media and everyone else seems to be willfully blind to the origin of the problem--CONGRESS.

8. Things have changed, so I think some operational adjustments make sense.

I love my delivery people, and certainly hope stopping Saturday delivery won't hurt any old timers. But nowadays, Saturday delivery doesn't make a lot of sense. I am assuming Postal Service continues package delivery. USPS has really excelled recently in providing Fedex/ups type services.

The USPS is still proof that government programs work well. But, like all, we need to adapt to new circumstances.

Here's hoping Congress doesn't do anything rash out of spite.

thing for people in rural and low population areas where it isn't profitable for UPS or other private carriers to go. Also, the Post Office has been an employer where many African Americans could find a secure job with good pay and benefits especially back in the days when many private companies wouldn't hire them in positions where they might be "seen". So it historically has had a high percentage of minority employees. I wonder if this is why the Republicans don't like it so much. Just sayin'. Maybe I need to adjust my tin foil had a bit but just wondering.
