raise the price of 1st class stamp to fifty cents

Consider this graph, which includes inflation-adjusted prices for postage (light blue). Notice that in adjusted terms, the price has been higher, and specifically topped out at around fifty cents more than once.

(and yes, let's also increase the rates for bulk mailings)

As usual, our modern govt can't seem to think in any terms except dismantling our public services, instead of (gasp) increasing revenues.

wonder how many of our Galtian Overlords could run a company under that kind of constraint.

Either way, the whole thing is a manufactured crisis. More disaster capitalism.

it was not the Republicans that forced pre-retirement funding.

It is harder to find a more bi-partisan law - it had a Democratic co-sponsor in the House (Henry Waxman) and passed unanimously in the Senate.

There are many Dems that thought this was (and still is) a good idea. That is why changing it is so hard.

And he stepped forward with some weak attempt to save historic Post Offices in Los Angeles. Way to go Henry, after the fact.

The problem is the prepayments they are making the post office make. They need to be done away with.

when it came to communicating with another individual. It is a wonder that the postal service can hold the line at 40 cents without killing its volume. I don't know what the supply/demand curve looks like, but I wonder how much additional dollars will be generated by increasing postage 20%.

monkeywrench from inside as much as possible - setting bad policies, providing inadequate service, abusing employees.

It all smacks of internal sabotage of an institution that did just fine until St Ronnie effed it up.
