Theres talk that Ashley Judd will be running against Mitch McConnell for his senate seat from Kentucky next year.
I know very little about Kentucky politics. But it seems to me that a liberal like Ms Judd would have a really difficult time winning in a very red state even against McConnell.
It would be great to see her whip Mr. My main goal is to make Obama a one-term president. But Im not sure its realistic.
Any opinions from DUers who live in Kentucky?

(53,339 posts)She's made no decision yet, but it looks like she wouldn't have as hard a time as one might expect. And the ad against her shows how serious a threat Republicans consider her.

Rove and his crappy American Crossroads PAC are trying to nip it in the bud.

(34,825 posts)Ms. Judd is probably rather respected and adored throughout the state, whereas mcconnell is one of the most hated life forms on the continent.

Do the GOP's early attacks against the Hollywood actress mean they're nervous about her potential candidacy?
American Crossroads spent $10,000 this week on a Web-only ad exploiting her myriad political weaknesses. The ad pointed out that Judd lives in Tennessee, not Kentucky; she's an actress--how could Hollywood stars relate to down-to-earth Kentuckians?; and, perhaps most damaging, she campaigned vigorously for President Obama, who's unpopular in Kentucky. "I will go wherever the president wants to go," Judd says in a sound bite from the ad.
"A lot of people are pumping a lot of hot air into the Ashley Judd trial balloon," said American Crossroads spokesman Jonathan Collegio. "This was designed to pin prick that."
But for an undeclared candidate whose liberal views make her candidacy vulnerable to attack, theyre doing an awful lot to dissuade her from running. Why not wait until shes actually in the race before launching grade-A opposition research against her? Democrats believe that its a sign of how vulnerable McConnell is. Even his own polling, released in December, showed McConnell stuck at 47 percent against Judd, holding only a 4-point lead.

I think there's a good chance of her taking that seat if she runs and I hope she does. Why else is the GOP spending such a huge amount of cash when she hasn't even declared yet.

(15,035 posts)But I just don't get it. Kentucky seems to be as red as it gets. What happened there?
Anyone familiar with Kentucky politics?

(3,709 posts)Can Judd win? Possibly...I certainly never thought that Rand Paul could, but I was wrong. Cyrano asked in one reply to this thread if the tea party was dimming in KY. I think it is to the extent that is dimming everywhere.
Kentucky politics have always been a bit strange. We were once a Democratic state but Reagan changed that, but Kentucky actually went for Bill Clinton one election. Our current governor, Steve Breshear is a fairly liberal Democrat, and I have hope that the next governor will be his Lt. Gov, a good liberal.
The congressional district that I live in (Lexington) just elected Andy Barr, a true nutcase, as US Rep, defeating a Democrat...or DINO...as Ben Chandler proved to be. Lexington is a more liberal community than the rest of the state (other than Louisville), but Chandler had done nothing to distinguish himself and Barr won this year after narrowly losing last election cycle.
At the risk of invoking the gun, god, and pickup truck meme, this state will most likely remain conservative for a long time. But remember this is a state where the small town of Vicco, KY pop ~1500 just voted to ban discrimination against gays. Vicco is nestled deep in the mountains...if they can be enlightened, there is hope.
The tide appears to be turning against Mitch...but not sure which direction yet...to a more progressive side or toward the Teabaggers. With Judd polling so well, against McConnell, maybe we are looking at a sea change here. Going to be an interesting couple of years.

(15,035 posts)Perhaps we're seeing the beginning of the end of the "Old South."
Virginia voted for Obama twice and North Carolina once. (I believe the second time the vote was suppressed/stolen in NC.)
If Ms Judd runs and wins, we may finally see an end to the "Southern Strategy." And that means today's GOP will be dead in the water. They'll be forced to enter the 21st century.

(21,925 posts)but just the idea of seeing her in all her classiness and glamour standing next to a decrepit tortoise on a debate stage has got to make Republicans think twice.

(111,095 posts)I don't know why? Maybe it is because there are very poor Republicans that are not as easy to get to the polls during hard times. KY basketball is like a religion. I admit that I belong to a cult.

(3,709 posts)Love Kentucky basketball and really loving what's happening with the football team...maybe we'll win a game next year! Wanna bet Ashley Judd shows up at a football game or two????
Louisville, Lexington, and to some extent Northern Kentucky tend to vote more in off year elections...and with more Democrats registered in the urban areas, it helps.

The obvious differences between the two candidates could bode well for Ms. Judd.
