Between 1945 and 1949 we thought we had a long-term Nuclear Monopoly....
Some suggested that nuclear weapons technology was so different that a UN monitored ban was necessary. The prevailing "popular" opinion of the time was that God gave the US The Bomb so that we could maintain world peace.
I think that Drone technology will turn out the same - a comfortable sense of superiority until one of our Enemies uses Drones just as we have, then shock and an arms race. And if Drone technology isn't bad enough, robots with autonomous kill decisions are right around the corner.
