I want the world to see what they did to my baby." -- Emmet Till's mother.
I owed it to him as his mother, the good, the bad and the ugly." -- Noah Pozner's Mother.
Parents of the dead children were advised to identify them from photographs, such was the carnage. But every parent reacts differently. Veronique Pozner did the most difficult thing. She asked to see the body.
Reporter Zeveloff asked her why.
"I owed it to him as his mother, the good, the bad and the ugly, she said. . . . And as a little boy, you have to go in the ground. If I am going to shut my eyes to that I am not his mother. I had to bear it. I had to do it.
When the governor of Connecticut arrived, she brought him to see Noah in the open casket. If there is ever a piece of legislation that comes across his desk, I needed it to be real for him. The governor wept.

They used to be print photos of bullet ridden bad guys propped up in coffins for all to see. Hangings were open to the public.
America needs to see the results of their bullshit gun policies and the aftermath.
We get freaked out over a few milliseconds of a breast shot but gun deaths are what, obscene?
Show the carnage on page 1 until we finally decide we have had enough and demand change!

(53,410 posts)I'm afraid I would do the same if my son was murdered. I feel I would owe it to him. If you love someone you have to love them all the way. Strangely enough if it was death by accident and the authorities advised not to see the body I might not request it. It's something about the violence of murder that would make me feel like a needed to bear witness to what they did.
It's strange, I know.

(13,877 posts)Bless that courageous Newtown mother. If Americans had to see...real life, not video games or tv, our policies would change. It is in the interests of the PTB to keep us wooed with substitute violence, jingoism, rather than the accountability of an American vote to send a gun, bullet, bomb decimating children, families, homes, villages.
Some say they chop off heads or pull out plugs on incubators, so that makes it right for us to bomb their heads off and deny electricity to preemies and entire hospitals, I guess.
marions ghost
(19,841 posts)yes--we have reality shows galore, all sorts of "in depth" coverage and gory pix.
Except when it's about the slaughter of children.
Show the bloody classroom.
HockeyMom
(14,337 posts)will know that it won't be just blood in the that classroom. Or anyone who has seen any human being who was shot in the head up close.
The people who NEED to see this (gun nuts) will refuse to. My husband shut off the TV when Sandy Hook happened. "I don't need to watch this kind of stuff." Well, maybe he does need to since he has NEVER seen anyone shot. I have.
marions ghost
(19,841 posts)of a mass killing?
Maybe we need to know that the shocking blood spattered pictures we see from some "uncivilized" country can be found right here? Would this help take the blinders off? There is a lot of denial here.
HockeyMom
(14,337 posts)Should we have not shown the film of JFK getting shot and his head blow away with his blood and brains spraying out? Should the autopsy pictures not been released? Thank Jackie, and public information, for that. How about coffins of war dead coming home? That might turn people against war, now wouldn't it? Same thing with showing pictures of a REAL crime scene? It is not some hyped TV show. I say SHOW the gun owners what their guns can do.
If Noah's mother wanted to show this, she doesn't have the right because if might INFLAME gun owners? Her right, the same as Jackie's.
Do you want ME to describe what I saw as a 6 year old witnessing an adult shot in the face? No, it was not just a neat TV bullet hole in the head.
marions ghost
(19,841 posts)--out of sensitivity to the parents and siblings--but otherwise show the crime scene photos from the school.
In the case of mass killings of adults, I would give permission for photos of bodies to be shown, if I were a relative. Maybe we are used to images of blood and gore in movies and video games, but the real thing, unsanitized--I think it still has an impact.
I am sure your horrific experience was traumatic Hockeymom. My SO saw people gunned down in a street & has never gotten over that. So I know to experience what you did as a child was even worse. But you are speaking out and not burying it...and maybe you can have some small part in the change which MUST come.
This is like the opening up of a huge national floodgate. I always knew it was there--the stress and anger that comes from living in a gun culture that has been welling up below the surface for many years. Let us hope and pray that Sandyhook is the turning point that will make people refuse to be silent.
No more.

(23,156 posts)Go to the people who think guns are just fine to have, and show them before and after photos of these children. Or just about anyone who dies from gunshot. It's nothing the way Hollywood depicts. The brutal damage wrought on a body is almost impossible to understand.

(541 posts)While I was still mourning --pretty heavily, actually-- (more than 1,000 miles from Sandy Hook) just days after the murders in Sandy Hook, my rightwing family was already going off. Not even about what a horrifying tragedy it was, but about how Obama was going to take MY guns away as a result of this. It was all about ME ME ME! Nothing about the kids slaughtered there.
It was like they had no sadness for the people of Sandy Hook, just sadness and anger for how THEIR gun rights would be SHATTERED by Obama.
Sorry- I just thought of the contrast between the selflessness of Noah's mother, and the selfishness of the righties. Using Sandy Hook as another way to get mad at President Obama. Cowardly.

(12,233 posts)much more like they were owners of a vehicle, and for all weapons sold or legal in the US to be registered in a Federal Database with paperwork following the weapon like a vehicle's registration is.
The licensing would be a process of gun safety courses along with weapons training certified by instructors. Along with a test for mental fitness and background check of who lives in the home and how the owner is going to store the weapon. Along with some sort of weapon insurance for accidents or deaths for the licensed owner.
All weapons would need to be registered by the manufacturers before being sold on the open market. Every gun shop and gun show seller would have to check for a owner's license (this would eliminate the burden of making sure a gun owner was "ok" because the person had already been thru the Federal Guideline check for owning a firearm). As well, every weapon in one's home that had not been previously listed on the registry would be the responsibility of the gun owner to take the weapon to a Federal Registration office to create paperwork and make sure the owner had gone thru the licensing requirements. Any weapon found after a certain grace period or any person not qualifying for a license would lose their weapon immediately or be subject to 5 yrs in jail. Within the grace period there could be buy back initiatives at police stations to get the illegal weapons out of homes and off the streets.
I would assume that any insurance company that would be insuring a gun owner would work hand in hand placing requirements and regulations on owners and weapons so that their pay outs are minimized.
The gun owners keep saying that cars kill more people every year than guns do, well cars have a certain set of guidelines for ownership and driving of the car. There are minimum age requirements, training, permits, classes, insurance, and licensing needed before a purchase of a car or to drive a car. Lets be real, gun owners aren't really going to take on the Federal Govt. it would have happened way before the Govt created nuclear weapons and the Pentagon. Now, we have flying, unmanned drones flying about in the sky. The last 2 Presidents have basically decided using them to target terrorists is ok, and that a terrorist can include American Citizens.
The weapon manufacturers use the NRA and lobbying to keep themselves in business and for certain people armed to the teeth in fear. If people can still buy their weapons and there is a process like buying a vehicle, those who want a weapon will go thru the process that they need to in order to own a weapon. And the gun shows can still go on, and the manufacturers could use incentives like paying for the license course with a gun owners first purchase. They could adapt. Would they be as likely to smuggle weapons into Mexican drug cartels as easily, most likely not, but perhaps they could go to Mexico and buy themselves a few politicians to allow for guns to be easier to purchase... But that's their own damn problem to figure out. In the USA, weapons and owners would be licensed, insured, and registered. And if these gun owners say that owning a weapon is their right and they only use them to hunt, for recreation, or home protection, then they shouldn't have a problem taking the steps to be a responsible gun owner in the first place. At the very least, this type of process should decrease the amount of mass shootings and will actually give gun owners a means to education and practice in owning a gun. So many of these people seem rather uneducated when it comes to owning a weapon or being able to use it.
In the long run, it will probably be hunters and sport recreational owners into the future that even bother. If less people bother going thru the process of owning a hand gun, and we have a period of 10 or so years to get many of the illegal weapons off the street, then the need for "protection" may decrease. It would be harder for criminals to get a weapon easily if all legal weapons must be registered and only sold to someone with a license and insurance.
Just making certain elements of a weapon illegal or hitting around the edges of certain weapons won't stop the violence alone. We also have to recognize why certain areas in cities become crime ridden and why it is that gang and the violence that goes with it seems like the only path for children. It's unfortunate that they are targeting the wrong people in their communities, rather than taking their voice and strength in numbers and demanding a political solution to the inequality and lack of opportunity that we are seeing blight our country more and more every year. If surviving wasn't such a "battle" in this country, perhaps people wouldn't feel like even needing a gun or be in a position where it was an everyday part of life.

(239 posts)Last year in fargo coming back from lunch at noon. A anti abortion group had billboard signs showing very high res photos of chopped up babies to promote their point of these lives are worth saving... school bus of children seen the photos and were screaming as they passed. It was horrifying.. but they got the point across. I thought they should of got charged with obscenity in public. With the sick photos. It was bombed on an un notified public just getting thru a noon hour. they didn't get charged , probably got a backing for their next horrible tirade on citizens. So if its ok for the Anti Abortionist to throw pics of destroyed babies, why can't a Mother who lost a 5 year old child that was shot 5 to 11 times in a school. to have equal footing in making policy changes by showing.. her child, after he/she has had some life and then killed by a weapon "that" (had sold out after his/her death) (sick). compared to a fetus that has not breathed life and had been ended by the family for the sake of the mother or the fetus. quality of life..... I guess bullets outweighs birth control.

(1,306 posts)The NRA reaps the fruits of their labor.
They sowed the seeds of fear, paranoia, and
the necessity and proliferation of gun ownership
to defend one's self, one's property and one's freedom
from an invisible menace gathering at the gates.
They sow these seeds, and they reap a harvest of death --
not security and not freedom. Death.
They are ashamed to take the credit for these results.
