The school board voted to close the neighborhood elementary school last night.

I have lived here for over 30 years and had grown accustomed to having Lincoln Elementary nearby. They said it was was for financial reasons. I have my doubts. I think there may be a plan underfoot to allow some charter school to take it over? I have no proof but reading about the GOP plan in Florida attempting to allow charter schools access to public buildings did create the doubt in my mind. I may be wrong but this could be a GOP plan across the nation? After all, their biggest hurdle is finding the buildings for their schools.

It tends to fluctuate. In a few years, the children now in elementary will have their own children and will need a school. It's sort of a landmark and sad to see it close. It wasn't the only one. They closed a high school and two or three other elementary schools also. There are budget concerns. But there are always political concerns when it comes to our public schools, also.

I've seen them take over abandoned warehouses, grocery stores, old Wal-Marts, etc.

schools are being consolidated. Around here, they consolidated 4 small K-6 schools that kids walked to and that provided neighborhood playgrounds into one giant school that the kids are bussed to. But it has a hell of a gym!

I suppose they will consolidate with other surrounding schools? It will be tougher on the parents and students but they will save money.
