Matt Taibbi: Breaking Up Banks 'Should Be The Holy Grail Of Activist Goals'

from HuffPost:

Calling all activists! Calling all activists! Matt Taibbi has a cause for you to rally around.

The progressive darling and Rolling Stone contributor said that breaking up the banks “should be the Holy Grail of activists goals” in an Ask Me Anything on Reddit Thursday.

“Again, to repeat, breaking up the banks is the big thing,” he typed to Reddit users. “That should be the Holy Grail of activist goals. Everything flows from the TBTF problem. If that can be accomplished, we're off and running.”

It’s no surprise that Taibbi is pushing for an end to TBTF -- that stands for too big to fail, by the way -- it’s been a pet peeve of his for some time. He joins a variety of other big names in finance, including famed author Michael Lewis and Britain’s Treasury Chief George Osbourne, in calling for an end to an era in which banks are so huge their collapse could bring down the economy. ..................(more)

and we dont fix the election system. The Repukes are apt to gain more control of Congress and possibly the presidency. If that happens, kiss your public financing gains goodbye.

Nothing can be fixed if we dont have free and fair elections.

But I believe that getting the money out of our elections is the best start toward getting other reforms done, like ending jerrymandering and those scandalously long lines at polling places in some states we saw in November.

campaign financing. And in 2014 the republicans steal enough elections to add to their HOR majority and manage to get a majority in the Senate. You can kiss your campaign financing bill goodbye.

With out free and fair elections, whatever progress you make will be undone when the repubs get more power.

I think we decrease the likelihood of getting other things done, since rich Repugs have poured so much money into getting their candidates elected. I guess we have sort of a "chicken or the egg" situation here.

I agree with others here that full public financing of elections and campaigns would be the most important battle, and would eventually end TBTF. That's a tough one, though, getting corporate money out of our elections will be an unbelievably difficult (but necessary) fight. Given that, maybe we should target TBTF first, I really don't know. Both things have to happen.

Unfortunately some have one-track minds that focus on the most minuscule of issues.

We need to solve the riot police/beatings/arrests/felonies/FBI/DHS problem to get to the banks and end them.
