BREAKING: New Report Reveals Palermo's Manipulated Immigration Audit UW-Madison labor code violations also implicates Palermos and Roundy's
MILWAUKEE: Members of the Palermo Workers Union welcomed a new report released today by the independent Workers Rights Consortium (WRC), a labor rights monitoring organization, which finds that Palermos Pizza is engaged in an illegal, ongoing anti-union campaign at their Milwaukee frozen pizza factory.
The WRC was established to prevent sweatshop abuses in factories that produce apparel and other products for US colleges and universities.
The report, which can also be found atwww.workersrights.org/Freports/Palermo.asp, is titled Worker Rights Consortium Assessment: Palermo Villa, Inc. (Milwaukee, WI) Findings, Recommendations, and Status, and issues a damning indictment against Palermos for serious violations of worker rights, alleging that these violations remain ongoing.
It provides new details of the specific violations of federal law found by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in its complaint against the company, and concludes that Palermos violated US and international laws, as well as a University of Wisconsin labor code to which Palermos is a party.
The WRC report also provides independent and credible support for the workers charge that Palermos manipulated enforcement of federal immigration laws in an attempt to eliminate union supporters and intimidate workers.
Specifically, the WRC report confirms:
-- Palermos violated federal labor law when it used an immigration audit as pretext to retaliate against workers exercise of freedom of association.
-- Palermos hostility to unionization was the motivating factor governing their threatening and retaliatory behavior towards employees.
-- Palermos violated federal labor law when it permanently replaced some 30 striking workers who were
not asked to reverify their work documents.
-- Palermos violated UW-Madisons code of conduct governing a licensing agreement with Roundys.
-- Palermos engaged in a pattern of illegal unfair labor practices that were calculated to coerce workers
from exercising their rights.
