School board might ban all clubs rather than allow a gay-straight one

(MSN) The road of good intentions is paved with hell, especially in Lake County, Fla. Last year, middle schooler Bayli Silberstein had hoped to start the Gay-Straight Alliance, a club to help her friends who had been "bullied for their sexual orientation." The school repeatedly denied her request, even when she and her mom contacted the American Civil Liberties Union for assistance. The ACLU referred administrators to the federal Equal Access Act, which prevents schools from picking and choosing clubs "based on what they think students should or should not discuss." The school board is on the verge of throwing a major tantrum and considering banning every extracurricular group, period. Guess that rules out a “This School Board Sucks” club.
