Water balloon fight costs school its prom

HYDE PARK — Withrow High School has canceled its May 2 prom to punish students for a senior prank.

Sharon Johnson, principal of the Cincinnati public school in Hyde Park, said students used social media last month to plan a massive water balloon fight at lunch.

Staff found out about it and tried to stamp out the plan.

Johnson made two separate school-wide announcements on the day of the prank, and another in person at the start of the lunch period.

“We asked them respectfully not to do it. We talked to them about safety issues, including causing panic and kids who could get upset because they got hit or wet,” she said. Each time, she said, she warned them that prom would be canceled if they proceeded.

“I didn’t think they were going to do it. I really thought they valued their prom,” said Johnson.

But toward the end of the lunch period, one student stood up and the water fight was on.

hopefully they will plan a BIG party *without* the "help" of the school.

Prom isn't free, and the local vendors will probably "help" get things started.

Problem solved.

ON EDIT: Taking something away from "everyone" that "everyone" can easily re-create without your help just strikes me as foolish on the part of the administration of this school. Also, throwing out a punishment that wouldn't hit for months to stop behavior NOW -- DUMB. Not impressed.

How about all the kids involved put in a long 8-hour Saturday building a Habitat House or some other worthy community service, and then let bygones be bygones and hold the prom anyway.

No sense punishing the kids who weren't involved.

Went ahead and did it after THREE warnings about what would happen? They made their decision.

ROFL...

Maybe if kids got to play dodgeball again they wouldn't have to resort to this

There were 175 students involved. Based on a senior class of about 200 (750 total enrollment at the school), I'd say that level of participation warrants a group punishment.

If a kid slips and twists and ankle, the school is in trouble. Also, who was supposed to clean up the mess? If they were going to leave it for the lunch room and janitorial staff, that's disrespectful and entitled.

The punishment works for me. Sounds like most parents were OK with it, too.
