But hasn't it always been standard DU policy for everyone to automatically get one heart, and that only the second an subsequent hearts are actually ones that have been purchased for the recipient by other people?
If I am wrong, then I should (and, of course, do) thank whoever gave me one. But my memory tells me that if I have a single heart, it was probably put there by the DU administrators' programming rather than by a secret admirer.
ON EDIT: As I have learned from all the posts on this thread, I was quite wrong about where first hearts come from. Anyone with a heart can rest assured it was deliberately donated by a kind and generous DUer!

Regardless, I hear it from unnamed sources that Skinner really does love me.

They don't give you one for participating.

(51,021 posts)and did not get an additional heart for that. So I'm thinking the admins are not giving hearts.
This is a fun idea.

(51,666 posts)so I clicked and did it, lol.
When I bought mine virtually no one had any yet - the mods must have just put the banner up about it right before I came to DU today.

(65,490 posts)Someone above says he does see people with no hearts and that he likes to buy hearts for them.
Maybe only star members get automatic single hearts. Or maybe no one gets a heart, not even a single one, unless someone purchases it.
If that is the case, then I have been wrong in thinking no one purchased the single heart for me, and if that is so, then I am sorry and I must say thanks, too.
Maybe it was the poster above, the one who is purchasing hearts for the--ah, "heartless doesn't seem quite right, does it? Maybe he/she saw my empty heart space and decided to buy me a transplant.
I don't know. I was just curious about how the hearts are allocated. Also, I usually have an excellent memory, and when I find myself not sure about what I think I remember, I am driven to find out whether my memory is at fault. At age 62, I am always concerned over the possibility that my usually reliable memory might be letting me down.

(68,918 posts)I gave out a bunch of hearts to people who previously had no heart. I think the Admin-heartgiving cycles and not everyone gets one at the same time. For people to assume that the heart they got was from admin is depressing.
tblue37
(65,490 posts)previous promotions. (I also was worried because I had one heart and had not said thanks, because I assumed it was from the admins rather than from a generous DUer--which, as it happens, it actually was--from a generous DUer, I mean.)
Mojorabbit
(16,020 posts)While the admin may give paying posters a heart(not sure), all are not from admin. I am finding people all over the site with no hearts. Someone thinks you are special!

(8,646 posts)I just gave some to people who didn't have any - and that was an hour or so ago. Just FYI. I think the hearts from admin would've come at the beginning and an hour ago was well past that.

(46,436 posts)but every time I've donated during one of these things, the first heart appears almost immediately. That's what happened to me yesterday. The whole heart thing had been going on for some time and I didn't have any, but as soon as I donated, one popped up almost immediately. I could be wrong about the admins, but with the timing it seems like more than a coincidence.
scarletwoman
(31,893 posts)I had just bought a batch and came across a post by you in the first thread I opened after donating. I saw you didn't have a heart yet, so I clicked and gave you one right away. It IS coincidental that you donated at the same time - we share a brain, remember?
I don't believe for one minute that the Admins interfere in any way with the giving of hearts, including giving people a heart when they donate. In years past I've often gone heartless for some time after I donated. The timing of when people get hearts has to do with what threads they happen to post in, and who happens to spot one of their posts.
This year I already had one heart when I first got online yesterday - before I donated. The other hearts have trickled in as I've posted here and there.
Blue_In_AK
(46,436 posts)Hmm, well, okay then, I stand corrected. I've been laboring under that delusion about the admins for as long as they've been doing this heart thing. I'm so embarrassed.
And, look, we have the same number of hearts! We really ARE the same person.
scarletwoman
(31,893 posts)About the Admin thing - it's weird, this year is the first time I've ever heard that bit of speculation. Don't be embarrassed, apparently you're not the only one who thought this.
tblue37
(65,490 posts)DUer named "tblue," so if I actually am the same as another person, I would imagine that would be her--though we have taken to greeting each other as "cuz" when we run into each other on DU.
tblue37
(65,490 posts)When I saw all those thank you threads, I got to worrying. I had assumed the heart was some sort of automatic thing, but then everyone was saying thanks--but I wasn't, and it made me feel downright churlish to think that someone had done such a nice thing for me and I had not said thank you for it.
So I am saying thank you now--and a big wide thanks also to all the other kind and generous DUers who have given me hearts!

Does anyone know whether the first heart used to be given out by the admins in past Valentine's Day promotions? I am still curious about whether I am remembering that wrong.

At any rate, a kindness to an outcast kid could very well have been an important lifeline to him.
