I see so many posts saying "Thanks for the heart."

Last edited Sun Feb 10, 2013, 01:24 AM - Edit history (1)

But hasn't it always been standard DU policy for everyone to automatically get one heart, and that only the second an subsequent hearts are actually ones that have been purchased for the recipient by other people?

If I am wrong, then I should (and, of course, do) thank whoever gave me one. But my memory tells me that if I have a single heart, it was probably put there by the DU administrators' programming rather than by a secret admirer.

ON EDIT: As I have learned from all the posts on this thread, I was quite wrong about where first hearts come from. Anyone with a heart can rest assured it was deliberately donated by a kind and generous DUer!

Someone above says he does see people with no hearts and that he likes to buy hearts for them.

Maybe only star members get automatic single hearts. Or maybe no one gets a heart, not even a single one, unless someone purchases it.

If that is the case, then I have been wrong in thinking no one purchased the single heart for me, and if that is so, then I am sorry and I must say thanks, too.

Maybe it was the poster above, the one who is purchasing hearts for the--ah, "heartless doesn't seem quite right, does it? Maybe he/she saw my empty heart space and decided to buy me a transplant.

I don't know. I was just curious about how the hearts are allocated. Also, I usually have an excellent memory, and when I find myself not sure about what I think I remember, I am driven to find out whether my memory is at fault. At age 62, I am always concerned over the possibility that my usually reliable memory might be letting me down.

but every time I've donated during one of these things, the first heart appears almost immediately. That's what happened to me yesterday. I could be wrong about the admins, but with the timing it seems like more than a coincidence.

I had just bought a batch and came across a post by you in the first thread I opened after donating. I saw you didn't have a heart yet, so I clicked and gave you one right away. It IS coincidental that you donated at the same time - we share a brain, remember?

I don't believe for one minute that the Admins interfere in any way with the giving of hearts, including giving people a heart when they donate. In years past I've often gone heartless for some time after I donated. The timing of when people get hearts has to do with what threads they happen to post in, and who happens to spot one of their posts.

This year I already had one heart when I first got online yesterday - before I donated. The other hearts have trickled in as I've posted here and there.
