Stephanie Cutter Lays Out Main Themes In Obama’s State Of The Union Address

Stephanie Cutter, who served as deputy campaign manager for President Obama's re-election effort, said on Sunday that his upcoming State of the Union address will focus on creating a fair and growing economy.

"He's going to lay out the case for the things that he thinks this country needs to accomplish," Cutter said on ABC's "This Week." "They'll be very familiar themes. The economy will be central to this speech and how we grow the economy so that everybody can participate, a fair shot, pay your fair share."

She continued: "But the other things that he does lay out, he'll lay out the looming deadline on the sequester, the tough choices that we have to make around it, and the consequences if we let the sequester go into effect, and, you know, cuts to some pretty critical programs. So I think the State of the Union is always an important moment in a presidency. This is another chance to make the case -- not just to the people sitting in that room, but to the country of the tough choices that we have to make, and I think he'll make it."

Obama State Of The Union To Refocus On Economy
President Barack Obama will focus his State of the Union address on boosting job creation and economic growth at a time of high unemployment, underscoring the degree to which the economy could threaten his ability to pursue second-term priorities such as gun control, immigration policy and climate change.

Obama also may use Tuesday's prime-time address before a joint session of Congress to announce the next steps for concluding the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

(snip)
The president will follow up his speech with trips across the country to promote his calls for job creation. Stops are planned Wednesday in Asheville, N.C., and Thursday in Atlanta.
