down our road in Middletown but it's just a single lane now. At least we can get out if we really have to.

I think I'll wait and see if they'll open it up a bit more before digging out the plow debris.

Who'd have thought tat you could be snowed in for so long in a highly populated place. I can see it happening here where I'm a mile from the pavement but right there in town?

I have relatives and friends just north of you and they were plowed out, in a rural town, by mid day yesterday.

Guess it is pretty bad... 34 inches is quite a bit in one event. I remember storms that dumped a lot of snow, nearly as much, back in the late 60s and early 70s back when I lived in New England. Out here in the mountain west, that happens a few times each year but it's expected here.

of it! I remember how we tunneled out...it felt like I was walking in a ditch...no way we could get a car out. We just congregated on the street and talked. I remember we had two engineers on the street, one was a major in the Army Corps of Engineers and the other was a Seabee captain. We used to kid them about what they were doing to help the situation...heh, heh...

I was driving semis back then and I was traveling eastward (ultimately to Detroit) across SD when it started being talked about among the drivers headed west. By the time I was into MN there were three foot drifts across the road but it was still quite passable as it was so cold that there was dry pavement in between them. By the time I got into WI the drivers going the other direction were warning me of a big storm, deep snow, lots of wrecks ahead and that going beyond Portage might not be the best idea. I was so close to home, northern burbs of Chicago, that I just kept going. Well before I got to Madison, WI it was evident that the only way to go was forward, couldn't get off the Interstate because there must have been a dozen vehicles stranded in each off and on ramp. Every other median turn around had a cop or two stuck in it, semis were strewn about on the side of the road laid over, it was a mess. And it was about -20F by the time the sun came up.

When I got down to the exit nearest my house I was glad to get off, the exit was plowed as there were a couple fuel stops there. It took nearly all day waiting for the plows to make it to that point from town. One trucker seemed to think he was going to blast through four feet of snow on the road going in that direction. He got bogged down about 3/4 of a mile out and it took two sand trucks with plows AND a front end loader to pull his rig off a two foot platform of snow he had built up in his bid to blast through (the tires were that high off the road surface and snow was packed tight under the whole length of the vehicle).

When I finally got down to my house, I literally had to "swim" over the surface of the snow to get to the door, it was above my waist and up to my armpits in most places due to drifting. And of course, I had to move enough snow to get in the door... turned out to be a really long day.

That was my biggest deep snow adventure from back in those days. I left for Detroit early the next morning and it was like driving in a tunnel all the way with snow banks close to the same height as my 13'6'' trailer. Never forget that one.

my heart goes out to you. We only had about a foot around here, the plows had no trouble with it. But having had more, I know how bad it is.
