Homophobic Students, Teacher Want to Ban Gays From Indiana High School Prom

Diana Medley, a special education teacher at Sullivan High School, is among those who approve of the idea of holding a discriminatory “traditional prom” for straight students only.

Some students, parents and even a special education teacher are taking it upon themselves to ensure that their high school’s prom includes a heavy dose of discrimination by calling for the exclusion of gay attendees.

The group members met over the weekend at Sullivan First Christian Church to figure out how they can hold a “traditional prom.” The goal, they say, is to get the high school in Sullivan, Ind., to hold one that is “separate but equal.”

Gawker:

“If we can get a good prom then we can convince more people to come and follow what they believe,” student Kynon Johnson told NBC 2.

“We want to make the public see that we love the homosexuals, but we don’t think it’s right nor should it be accepted,” said student Bonnie McCammon.

Along with parents and local pastors who supported the throwback initiative, one teacher also spoke out in favor of the homophobic prom.

“I believe that it was life circumstances and they chose to be that way; God created everyone equal,” said special ed teacher Diana Medley. “Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don’t agree with them, but I care about them. It’s the same thing with my special needs kids, I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason.”

Asked if she thought gays also “have a purpose in live,” Medley responded, “No, I honestly don’t. Sorry, but I don’t."

Fortunately, not everyone shares these bigoted views. A counter campaign has launched that calls for the school to do the right thing by allowing all students to attend the prom. The Facebook group “Support the Sullivan High School Prom for All Students” states, “This page was started by concerned citizens of southern Indiana. We are not affiliated with Sullivan High School in any way. We simply wanted to show support for the school and those in the community who support LGBT rights.” ...................(more)

Translation: "We love "those people", why we even know some of "those people", but they're just like special needs kids and we can't have those misfits at our prom either!"

They can all go f*ck themselves as far as I'm concerned!

No students have been banned from attending the prom. A group of students and parents along with a local church are trying to host a "traditional" prom separate from Sullivan High School in a different location. It is unfair for the caring and accepting students to be faced with this division. If there are two proms, some students will pay to attend both proms in support of ALL of their friends. Those are the kids who deserve recognition. Is it fair to force the kids or their parents to pay for them to attend both?

This started with a petition made by a student who no longer attends the high school according to my sources.

Medley teaches at North Central Jr/Sr high school NOT Sullivan High School. She is listed as a resource teacher at this website http://www.nesc.k12.in.us/nchs/facultystaff/facultystaff.htm. Different high school and school corporation, same county. She may be affiliated with the church that is attempting to host the "traditional" prom. This is an interesting bit of info the local news station WTWO has failed to mention. Many disagree with her.

The original article I read from the local newspaper explained things as you describe. The students just want to have a separate, and unequal, "traditional" prom. I defy them to come up with a meaningful definition for traditional prom.

No one wants to ban anyone from the high school sponsored prom.

I find it very disturbing a teacher, especially a special ed teacher, when interviewed responded:

"Asked if she thought gays also 'have a purpose in live,' Medley responded, 'No, I honestly don’t. Sorry, but I don’t.'"

This is a person teaching kids who have traditionally been labeled as not having a purpose in life. How does she feel about her students one wonders?

She should learn to relax. She could start by losing all those bigoted ideas.

it made me so angry I wanted to reach through the monitor and smack that Stepford Wives smile right off her perky blonde self.

Hope that's not too violent and this gets hidden.
