By Annie-Rose Strasser
The Violence Against Women Act reauthorization passed through the Senate on Tuesday afternoon, by a vote of 78 to 22. Of those opposing the legislation, all 22 were Republican men. Every female Senator supported the bill.
Among the most notable votes against the bill were Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). Heres a look at all 22 opponents of VAWA:
VAWA expired during the previous Congress, and because of Republican opposition to provisions for Native American, undocumented, and LGBT victims of domestic violence, the different versions approved by the House and by the Senate were never reconciled, and the bill died without final passage at the end of 2012.
<...>
The version passed by the Senate today will next go to the House for a vote, where it is expected to encounter some difficulties, particularly over the protections of tribal women included in the bill.

(6,335 posts)Marco Rubio opposes Violence Against Women Act
Sen. Marco Rubio was among the 22 GOP senators who voted against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act a law that the Florida Republican said he largely supports but couldnt ultimately vote to renew because of new provisions in the bill.
Rubio is scheduled to give the Republican response to President Barack Obamas State of the Union address Tuesday night.
Among his reasons for opposing the legislation, which passed 78-22: it would divert funds from domestic violence programs to sexual assault programs, even though theres no evidence to suggest this shift will result in a greater number of convictions, Rubio argued in a statement.
(Senate OKs Violence Against Women Act)
These funding decisions should be left up to the state-based coalitions that understand local needs best, but instead this new legislation would put those decisions into the hands of distant Washington bureaucrats in the Department of Justice, Rubio said.
In that statement, explaining his opposition, Rubio ticked off several parts of the law he supports, such as federal programs to prevent and reduce violence, and combining 13 existing programs to four to make those programs more efficient.
Rubio added that he was concerned with a provision that would grant tribal courts jurisdiction to prosecute crimes against non-Native Americans on tribal lands which several other Republicans have said could raise constitutional problems.
Unfortunately, I could not support the final, entire legislation that contains new provisions that could have potentially adverse consequences, Rubio said.

(10,597 posts)I want a Democratic super majority in the US Senate, since we can't get rid of or change the filibuster. What do they have against Native American women??? A woman is a woman. Might be a Mother, a daughter, a sister, an aunt or cousin. What's the beef, for Pete's sake????? I bet you a Snickers Bar that the bill DOES pass the House, i.e., if Baehner let's it come to the floor for a vote. Good job Senate!

(6,852 posts)We have 23 Senators up for reelection. They have 10.
7 of ours our seats in States the President lost.
On paper 2014 looks like a tough year for us.
But if Republicans keep doing stuff like this we might have a repeat of 2012.

(10,597 posts)...I need to face reality. Yeah, the only way we can gain is just stand back and let them all hang themselves. And hey, they are not going to change. They are who they are. So, I'm going to continue to think positive.

It truly saddens me when my American cousins do not have the same rights as Canadians (ie - gov't healthcare, access to abortion, equal rights wrt sex, sexual orientation, etc).
Is not security a human right!

(20,819 posts)on one of the nine SD reservations and hubby is an attorney in tribal law (we're white). The provisions in the new VAWA allowing for tribal court jurisdiction over non-members in these cases is desperately needed, as the federal prosecutors, who DO have jurisdiction over non-member offenders on reservations, generally only prosecute such offenders if the native woman has either been beaten within an inch of her life or killed. They don't bother otherwise, they're too busy going after Indians for misdemeanor drug offenses. And non-members know this and know they can get away with it. One in three native women will be the victim of domestic violence and/or sexual assault, and this is desperately needed to help stop it. It infuriates me beyond measure that allowing such jurisdiction was one of the sticking points with the GOP, they didn't want that. Many in the Indian media referred to it as "GOP protecting white men from prosecution", and that is, unfortunately, quite accurate.
I am thoroughly disgusted that my own dickhead corporatist ignorant dipshit GOP senator Thune is among this infamous crowd, and you'd better believe I will be contacting his office to ask them why the fuck he voted against this (not quite in those terms, of course) and where he puts his brain every day before he heads to work.

However, being that the GOP has decided to play politics with this important piece of legislation, I am glad the Senators Johnson, McConnell and Rubio, decided to take part in this appalling "game" they are playing.

(65 posts)Wouldn't it be great if these 22 were all introduced to a taste of the violence women live with? The term "Gang-raped" comes to mind. See how long they can sit on their little candy-asses after that? Except they would have to be orally raped as well, because that's always thrown in... and we want them to have the full violent experience. Do you think it would change any minds?
