The social media site blew up when the Florida Republican reached for a bottle of Poland Spring water as he was outlining the GOP's vision to help the middle class. His speech text ran for five pages, about half the length of Obama's remarks.
Abby Huntsman, the daughter of former GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman tweeted: "That water bottle shouldn't have been so far for him to grab. Too much awkwardness in one speech! #Rubio #SOTU."
Paul Begala, a Democratic strategist who helped elect President Bill Cllinton, tweeted, "Marco Rubio, the man you want to have a desperate gulp of water with."

On Edit: I can imagine all sorts of possibilities - diving boards, pole vaults, long jumps, there is just too much material there.

(5,937 posts)of any stripe. Obama is a great public speaker and great on the national stage, Rubio does not have that gift or the experience. What of it.

(8,556 posts)It just looks funny.
I do think, however, that a rejection of Rubio should be anchored in his bad ideas for the country and not his unfortunate stage presentation last night. I care much more about his policies than his parched throat.
That being said, I do know how he feels. The first time I had to speak in front of hundreds of people as an adult, I completely choked and it was beyond embarrassing. That night was not the most depressing of my life, but it was certainly up there. As lame as Rubio is, I'm willing to cut him some slack on the water thing. But on the actual contents of the speech itself? Not so much.

(14,040 posts)the water was like the crescendo to a movement of fail. He was awkward throughout the entire rebuttal. He was sweating (flop sweat), constantly touching his face, licking his lips. And then when he finally "lurched" for the water, it was like the train hitting the car.
