Coke Overdose? Mom Drops After Drinking 10 Liters of Coca-Cola a Day

The verdict culminates an almost three-year investigation into the death of Natasha Harris, a 31-year-old mother of eight who lived in Invercargill on the South Island of New Zealand. As we previously reported, Harris supposedly drank more than two gallons—yes, gallons—of Coke a day.

Oh, and Harris also smoked upwards of 30 cigarettes a day.

Coroner David Crerar concluded that, “when all the evidence is considered, were it not for the consumption of very large quantities of Coke by Natasha Harris, it is unlikely that she would have died when she died and how she died.” However, the coroner went to pains to absolve the drink maker itself: “Coca-Cola cannot be held responsible for the health of consumers who drink unhealthy quantities of the product...Natasha Harris knew, or ought of have known and recognized, the health hazard of her chosen diet and lifestyle.”

So…here’s what the company had to say about Crerar’s findings: “The Coroner acknowledged that he could not be certain what caused Ms Harris’ heart attack. Therefore we are disappointed that the Coroner has chosen to focus on the combination of Ms Harris’ excessive consumption of Coca-Cola, together with other health and lifestyle factors, as the probable cause of her death. This is contrary to the evidence that showed the experts could not agree on the most likely cause.”

4. This is ridiculous —Coke doesn't cause heart attacks

Obesity does. Smoking does. Inactivity does.

But c'mon... take the calories in 2 gallons of Coke and convert it into hershey bars. Then say someone who eats 25 hershey bars (or whatever it works out to) a day dies.

Would anyone, anywhere, cite Hershey bars as the problem?

6. There's ~108 g of sugar in a liter of Coke...

So 10 liters per day is 1080 g of sugar per day, a bit more than 2 1/4 pounds.

That's basically 4 1/2 cups of sugar every day.

a complete lack of fresh fruits and veggies and healthy protein in her diet would be my guess.

What could possibly go wrong??

Also, what was her BMI? Any chance it was NOT in the healthy range??

9. Excess of coke can do weird stuff to you -

- A co-worker drank tons of coke then went off it cold-turkey when she went on a diet. She then started having stomach problems that Dr. couldn't identify. Ended up with impacted bowels that required surgery. Reason given by Dr. = she drank so much coke for so long that it took over the process of digesting her food and her body no longer produced the acids needed for digestion. When she went off it cold-turkey, her food wouldn't digest properly and impacted her bowels. True story. I'm not creative enough to make it up.

I knew a couple of guys that drank a gallon of coke or Pepsi a day and they had problems. People have to exercise at least some level of self control. If you don't care you can kill yourself with almost anything. Even so called healthy food if eaten in unbalanced and excessive proportions can kill you. Don't believe me? Try eating 6 or 7 pounds of tofu and only tofu a day and see how you feel.

I read that story earlier and my first thought was that she did it to herself.

Must have been some underlying psychological problems to drink that much soda in a day.

That drank Coca-Cola in such quantities....

I acknowledge, upfront, that 2 is not by any measure adequate sampling,on which to make any claim...

I'm merely pointing out that I find it curious, that both of these people died of pancreatic cancer....

Having 8 kids will age you quickly, unless you take good care of yourself.

the usual boilerplate about moderate consumption as part of a healthy diet/lifestyle? Or just say nothing at all?

They must know that they produce a high-sugar product that isn't really a good idea to consume by the gallon - there's no shame in acknowledging that, but acting as if that fact doesn't exist looks a little sleazy...
