Just imagine for a second that you are Rubio and you just left your mark to grab a refreshing beverage while delivering a major speech. Imagine, if you will, that you KNOW you totally botched the job. You KNOW you are gonna be a laughing stock. So, what do you do? Do you just finish the speech and kiss your political future goodbye? Do you finish the speech and then attempt to show some good humor about the whole fiasco (seems to be the current strategy.)
Or do you go up to about the last line of the speech--the closing remarks--and then do a huge freaking swan dive and claim later it was some kind of illness...
Do you knock stuff over and go all the way down? Maybe even let them load you into an ambulance and take you away to the ER? Claim the lights and heat got to you-claim you'd been sick all day and were trying to do your best while ill--maybe dehydrated or something?
I told Kevsand last night, that I'd have opted for the huge swan dive and the protestations of illness. IMO, if you are going down, at least do it big!
What say you?

(60,018 posts)seriously, listening to a few of the pundits, much of the left and the sane middle thought he screwed up big time. The Obama haters on the right thought it was great. Just another reinforcement of polarization....and the whackadoodle views of the current right wing.

(13,421 posts)Sorry. That joke is older than Rubio is! It's probably older than either of us, come to think of it...

(34,423 posts)Nobody gives a big speech like that without water at the ready. Although, lucky for us, he was stupid and had no foresight. His assistant should be ashamed too. The gifs are hilarious, though. He looks like a nervous high school sophomore giving his final exam in Speech class or something.

(13,421 posts)In fact, my daughter who is a Sophomore, made a comment about it while the speech was happening. I'll grant you--she's been in Honors classes mostly and the expectations there are a bit higher than the norm. Rubio, however, is SUPPOSED to be an adult, and having attained that level of political office you'd think he's better at public speaking than that.
Seems to me that giving the GOP response to the State of the Union has become the GOP's way of eating their young. It is where they send the young politicians to die.

Hell, everyone forgot his insipid little speech already, might as well give the audience something to remember him by.
