The growing power of a rebel army has seen control of the Syrian capital of Damascus split between rival gunmen fighting for or against President Bashar Assad.
Two days of bloody carnage in which at least 74 people have died has come as the rebel force - the Syrian Free Army - steps up its mission to take control of the streets from government forces.
'We had a big battle here earlier this month,' a Damascus schoolteacher, who did not want to be identified for fear of reprisals, told The Times.

The Syrian opposition have said that they will do this on their own - no outside help.

(1 post)We respect democratic freedom and veto powers of Russia and China.but we need to be also concerned about the welfare of Syrian people.those opposed to Arab League's position on Syrian unpopular government are against the Syrian people as a whole.the other powers should arm the people to protect themselves from Assad's forces.

(18,795 posts)The terrorist "thugs" are people who took up arms to defend themselves against the real Assad thugs.
Even the Arab monitors came to that conclusion.
And many of the "terrorist thugs" are soldiers who have defected from Assad's army because of what he did to peaceful protesters. I have read that some of the defectors include Iranian snipers hired by Assad.
I guess you are unaware of what Assad's father did?

Just a general warning.
I hate that google news prominently features such trashy rags like this and "The Guardian" - the entire press was at its most shamefully speculative during Saif Gaddafi's flight from the rebels, but no one made more stuff up than The Mail and The Guardian.
They are not journalists; gossip columnists, at best.

(5,078 posts)It was the Guardian who kept the Murdoch phone hacking scandal in play until it broke open.
You are badly misinformed about the Guardian. It is noted for its investigative journalism.

(24,692 posts)The Syrian army has moved to retake control of Damascus suburbs from rebel forces, activists say. They say troops backed by tanks have been shelling rebel-held areas to the east and north of the city.
Dozens of people have reportedly been killed in what activists describe as the fiercest fighting around the capital during the 10 month-uprising.
Activists said more than 2,000 troops and 50 tanks had been involved in an attack early on Sunday on eastern suburbs of Damascus, barely 5km (three miles) from the city centre.
Rami Abdul Rahman, head of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the fighting was "the most intense near the capital since the uprising began". "The Syrian regime is trying to finish the uprising militarily now that the case is being taken to the United Nations."

The Syrian military has launched an offensive to regain control of suburbs on the eastern edge of Damascus, storming neighbourhoods and clashing with groups of army deserters in fighting that sent residents fleeing and killed at least three civilians, activists said.
Six soldiers were also killed when a roadside bomb detonated near the bus they were traveling in south of the capital.
The escalation in violence on Sunday coincided with the Arab Leagues suspending of its observer mission.
Activists inside Damascus told Al Jazeeras Anita McNaught that tanks had rolled into Al-Ghouta, within 10km of Damascus city centre.
