Faced with regular barrages of gunfire, officers confronting suspected killer Christopher Dorner lobbed incendiary tear gas into the cabin where Dorner allegedly was holed up, said law enforcement officials with knowledge of the situation.
The cabin caught on fire and authorities believe Dorner was burned inside. A body was discovered but authorities have not confirmed it was Dorner.
Law enforcement sources said the officers got into several gun battles with Dorner during a nearly four-hour siege at the cabin in the Big Bear area. The standoff began with Dorner allegedly fatally shot a San Bernardino County sheriffs deputy and seriously injured another.
SWAT officers surrounding the cabin were under a "constant barrage of gunfire," one source said. He put himself in that position. There werent a lot of options.

Well there ya go.
This seems to confirm audio snippets posted to YouTube which allegedly capture police's candid police conversations detailing an explicit desire to burn down the cabin the suspect was in:

(20,582 posts)1. I was sitting here listening to the audio all afternoon as I did books.
I could be mistaken, but there seemed to be quite a long time between the last gunfire volleys and the fire.

...on the scene indicated that the launch of the teargas canisters immediately precipitated the fire.

(20,582 posts)3. Yes, that's what I remember hearing too.
That reporter is so lucky to be alive ... it sounded like there were bullets flying all around him.

(23,864 posts)4. I didn't realize the LAPD had full-auto rifles. That was...
...a new one on me. At least, whomever was shooting at him/the cabin sounded like they were using full auto.
As a person who has discharged firearms many times in my life, hunting when younger and target practice only after the age of 13 or so, bullets and firearms still scare the living shit out of me and the concept of that much lead whizzing through the air frankly petrifies me.
