Krugman: Marco Rubio Has Learned Nothing (claims government caused the housing crisis)

Because his party has learned nothing.

OK, back up: this morning the papers and the web are full of nuance-sniffing, as people try to find omens in the SOTU and the GOP response. I don’t think I can add anything useful to all that. But there was one important point in Marco Rubio’s remarks that I don’t think has been highlighted. It’s true, as Andy Rosenthal says, that Rubio mainly reminded us that Republicans don’t like government or taxes; surprise! But he also reminded us that Republicans don’t like reality.

Here’s the passage:

This idea – that our problems were caused by a government that was too small – it’s just not true. In fact, a major cause of our recent downturn was a housing crisis created by reckless government policies.

This really isn’t about the GSEs, it’s about the BSEs — the Blame Someone Else crowd. Faced with overwhelming, catastrophic evidence that their faith in unregulated financial markets was wrong, they have responded by rewriting history to defend their prejudices.

This strikes me as a bigger deal than whether Rubio slurped his water; he and his party are now committed to the belief that their pre-crisis doctrine was perfect, that there are no lessons from the worst financial crisis in three generations except that we should have even less regulation. And given another shot at power, they’ll test that thesis by giving the bankers a chance to do it all over again.

Republicans don't need no 'stinking fact-checkers' because they don't rely on facts. They just know what they want and rewrite history to fit their needs.

... and the dipshit "newscaster" was taking POTUS quotes out of context and snipping them together to support his claim that "Obama wants the US to be a European style socialist democracy with high taxes, lots of government spending and equality for EVERYONE" (as if that's a bad thing?)

He then went on to say that POTUS wants "everyone to have the minimum wage, even if they're not working", and that he's going to make that happen by (here we go again) "redistributing the wealth" from "job creators" who have "earned their own money". He also stated that POTUS 'introduced over 20 new government programs" last night.

First, what a total sack of unadulterated bullshit.

Second, if "redistribution of wealth" were indeed what the President was aiming for, so what? This country would be well-served to put money in the hands of the people that need & spend it. THAT's what creates demand, tax revenues, and JOBS.

I almost threw my shoe at the tv, and I was just observing this while standing in the takeout line!!
