Sorry Obama, There's No Way Manufacturing Can Save America

In last night's State of the Union address, President Obama said: "Our first priority is making America a magnet for new jobs and manufacturing." He added:

After shedding jobs for more than 10 years, our manufacturers have added about 500,000 jobs over the past three. Caterpillar is bringing jobs back from Japan. Ford is bringing jobs back from Mexico. After locating plants in other countries like China, Intel is opening its most advanced plant right here at home. And this year, Apple will start making Macs in America again.

While there is much to applaud about the recent revival of American industry, manufacturing is simply insufficient to help revive lagging industrial regions or power the job creation the nation so badly needs. Here's why:

1. Manufacturing does not generate a lot of jobs:
2. Not all manufacturing jobs are good jobs:
3. Manufacturing jobs are concentrated in only some parts of the country:
4. Manufacturing does not translate into local economic growth and development:

Does generate local economic growth and development

Whether it is an engineer at Apple, Ford, or Intel, if that work is done here as part of the manufacturing process, jobs are created, and that flows back into the local community, which in turn creates more jobs, innovation etc.

Also, Richard Florida, the author of the article, has had his own share of critics. Wikipedia has a good write up on him

And given the increasing cost of fuel, it makes more sense to manufacture goods on American soil and pay our workers a living wage rather than outsource the job halfway across the world, pay chicken feed as wages, and then ship those same goods all the way back here, thus putting an undue strain on the environment and the worker alike.

Haven't we been complaining that the unions are losing too many members? What do you think global outsourcing does to unions, anyway?

President Obama warmly praised the North Carolina subsidiary of a Canadian auto-parts company that is investing in a right-to-work state during his post-State of the Union campaign swing Wednesday.

He flew to Asheville, N.C., on Feb. 13 and spoke at Linamar Corp., a Canadian-based auto-parts factory which has opposed union organizing efforts in Canada. The company also set up its new U.S. factory in North Carolina, which is a right-to-work state where unions have little political clout.

Small and medium manufacturing businesses that are bringing back jobs tend to be non-union.

Even if there are only a few jobs brought back to the USA, it puts money back into the economy, more taxes are paid and if you would be so lucky to get one of the jobs you might think your personal economy was improving. Cheer the result.
