Axelrod: The Question Is Not Whether Romney Played By The Rules
On Meet the Press, Obama campaign senior strategist David Axelrod talked about Romneys tax returns and the fact that he paid a 13.9% effective tax rate. Asked if Romney broke any rules, Axelrod pushed back. The question is, are the rules right, Axelrod said. And Romney would continue those rules. Its not right that Romney can make $22 million and pay an effective tax rate as middle income Americans. Just because Swiss bank accounts and Cayman Island funds are legal, doesnt make the tax system right.

(63,645 posts)I think that having Romney as our opponent might ultimately be better for the country. Because we might finally have a high-profile debate about how the system favors the wealthy, powerful, and privileged over everyone else.
This is the debate we need to have. Axelrod is right.

Tax the churches!

The question is: What are you gonna do about the rules?
And are there a lot of Democrats that do not want to change these rules either?

more equitable.
Ignores things like the Democratic push to decouple the tax cuts for the rich and the tax cuts for the middle class into separate bills, which Republicans refused to do. Ignores other bills Dems have put forward that were blocked by the Republicans.
Ignores the fact that Obama has been pushing hard from the "bully pulpit" on this issue for a long while now, urging people to call their reps and Senators and demand the wealthy pay their fair share.
Ignores Republican pledge of allegiance to Grover Norquist, which apparently over-rides their oath of office.
Ignores Democratic push to close loopholes in corporate taxes so that ALL corps pay taxes.
Lets Republicans off the hook.
Ignores lots and lots of things in order to pretend a bunch of stuff about Obama and Dems that aren't true.
In other words - typical half-truths that seem to dominate DU these days.

(379 posts)I am no fan of the Republicans, but if Romney was a mensch he would have said that he paid according to the system, but on reflection he realizes that the system must change.

(37,364 posts)Which he did. He lobbied while at Bain Capital to have the capital gains tax cut--the very same tax cut that lets him pay in at 15%.
