Maybe you couldn't tell from the smell and he had a medical emergency. Sure, the hospital did a blood test on his remains later but there's no way for the dad to have known the story before shooting him. While I can certainly sympathize with his anger, this is the sort of situation where clear heads are required.

Consider the situation of the guy whose wife just told him the neighbor molested their daughter. He breaks into the guy's house and stabs him to death, leaves the body for the guy's mother to find. Only guess what? His wife made the whole thing up because she wanted attention or something. Sorry, honey! You killed an innocent man and are going to prison! Tee-hee, it's just one of those kooky things you see in sitcoms! Sadly, true story.
