David Brooks, of all people, summed it up best for me on the PBS News Hour at the time of Reagan's death. Before Reagan was elected, he said, there was a common assumption that the US was gradually evolving into democratic socialism, something on the model of Sweden. Eventually we would get single payer health care, unlimited access to higher education, a basic right to decent housing, a cleaner environment, sustainable energy, liberalized drug policy, etc. etc. That the New Deal and, to a lessor extent the Great Society were set in stone, and we would evolve along their lines.

Reagan changed all that. We went from a New Deal/Great Society vision of government being there to provide a buffer against the worst unavoidable catastrophes life is prone to, and to offer opportunities to all, to the GOP Ayn Rand vision of government being evil, to be fought and shrunk and ridiculed, setting the "free market" lose and winner take all. "Trickle down" "voodoo economics," the end of any effort to cut our dependence on oil, a never ending "war on drugs" "just say no"--etc. etc. etc.

We're just now emerging from that dystopian nightmare. For all these reasons I think Reagan definitely ranks up there with G.W. Bush as the worst president since James Buchanon.

Reagan implemented the 1980s "society" we're still living (and dying) in.

You could tie everything back to Reagan and the BFEE in less than five.

Yea, it was in Texas...

and the rest went along with it. And all because people are uncomfortable with change and jealous of what someone else might get.

Reagan started it!!!!
So its ALL GOOD!
Nobody should get all upset.

The fact that advancements in technology makes it so much easier to Reach Out and Kill Someone...Anywhere....Anytime really doesn't change anything,
and the fact that this power of extrajudicial Assassination and tolerance for civilian "Collateral Damage",
with a Unitary Executives keeping "Kill Lists" in a perpetual undeclared WAR against a WORD is NOW codified National Policy,
endorsed by both Political Parties,
doesn't change a thing.

Its ALL GOOD!!!
