Ben Shapiro: Prop 8 judge "just using the power of his gavel to justify his sex life"

Last edited Sun Feb 17, 2013, 02:49 PM - Edit history (3)

Somehow I learned that Breitbot Ben Shapiro is out with a new book titled Bullies: How the Left's Culture of Fear and Intimidation Is Silencing America, in the latest of new sensationally titled books that might as well have been run thru a Right Wing Title Generator: (Negative Word): How Liberals Are (Doing Evil Things) and (Taking Away Our Freedom).

I just took a quick look at the Google Books preview. This is how he describes the US District Court ruling against Prop 8:

...Judge Vaughn Walker, a gay man...struck down Proposition 8 as violative of the California state constitution. Why? Because, said Walker, only morons would vote for Proposition 8. There was, he said, "no rational basis" for upholding traditional marriage. As it turns out, this one gay judge had discovered the utter irrationality of thousands of years of human history, every major religious leader, and the majority of people in California. Or, he was just using the power of his gavel to justify his sex life.

When you read phrases like "using the power of his gavel to justify his sex life" and "only morons would vote for Proposition 8", can you believe this Shapiro guy is actually a Harvard Law grad who passed the California bar exam????

In the same page, Shapiro chastises State Sen. Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) for sponsoring the bill that required the state public schools to teach LGBT history: "What was the excuse for forcing students to learn about the sexual lifestyles of historic figures? To make way for gay students so that they wouldn't be bullied. So 98 percent of students should be bullied into thinking one way so that the other 2 percent don't face quite as much of a possibility of being called names."

And in the google books page for Shapiro's load of crap, don't even try searching Sandra Fluke. You'll thank me later, if Limbaugh's original rant angered you enough back then.

The stupid continues in the official summary provided by google:

The left has created a climate of fear wherein ordinary Americans must abandon their principles, back abhorrent causes, and remain silent. They believe America is a force for evil, that our military is composed of war criminals, and that patriotism is the deepest form of treason. They incite riots and threaten violence by playing the race card, then claim they’re advocates for tolerance. Disagree with Obama? You must be a racist. They send out union thugs and Occupy Wall Street anarchists to destroy businesses and redistribute the wealth of earners and job creators. No target is off limits as liberal feminists declare war against stay-at-home moms, and gay activists out their enemies, destroy careers, and desecrate personal privacy.

All this crap make me thankful for DU for all the extensive discussion and debunking of shitty RW arguments and the various dimensions of political arguments here. For someone supposedly a boy genius (skipped 2 years of high school, graduated from UCLA at 20 then law school at 23) Shapiro...ugh I don't know what to say.
- DU is NOT a 100% pro obama board as my experience here for the past 3.5 years has shown, seldom have i seen people label disagreements with obama as racially motivated. But there's this poll showing that attaching Obama's name to "pathway to citizenship" for undocumented immigrants made the idea less tasteful among voters? (Bradley effect, anyone?)
- As for the left hating patriotism, etc. maybe if Shapiro took a more critical look at American history then he'd understand...but it's the money Lebowski! When I read those excerpts from the book, I wonder: does Shapiro really believe what he's writing or does he know how the cash flows from putting shit to words and being a Poster Boy for conservatism all over hate radio and FNC?
- "...destroy businesses and redistribute the wealth of earners and job creators." Yeah, the job creators who bust unions, export good middle-class jobs to China, hoard money in Swiss banks and the Cayman Islands, pollute our environment, and pump Benjamins in campaign contributions to defer ANY, ANY "too burdensome" regulation? But nah, forget these facts, it's much better (more profitable too with all these TV interviews, speaking engagements, book tours, etc.) to pickpocket a blindfolded "ordinary American" with distracting social issues and fauxrage!
- "incite riots and threaten violence by playing the race card": Anyone else think that Shapiro fantasizes about calling black activists like Sharpton the "N-word" to their face? We all know how Republicans have done the Southern Strategy from Nixon to Reagan to Santorum, and once again based on this statement "playing the race card...threaten violence" the underlying message is: "black people who don't conform to True American Patriot(TM) values= violent thugs".
- "liberal feminists declare war against stay-at-home moms" Does Shapiro have the slightest clue about feminism? Has he ever considered WHY it's harder in this modern age for most Americans to be stay-at-home moms, especially the lack of paid maternity leave policy in this nation? But never mind, better to make that money blindfolding "ordinary Americans" into sucking it up rather than fighting back...otherwise say goodbye to all the corporate sponsorships and speaking fees!

As far as I can see this book might as well be a failure, as it debuted at 32nd of 35 on the NYT nonfiction bestsellers list. This is Shapiro's first NYT Bestseller ranking after having written 4 other books. I say that 32nd is a failure because I've seen other right wing books stay on the list for weeks and weeks on end in higher rankings. But I think Shapiro did a great job of telling mindless, unthinking conservatives what they want to hear as opposed to anything that might break 'em out of their mindset, and more power to him if that's his schtick.

Instead of an ad hominem attack on the judge, perhaps he could explain just why he is wrong. If there are no specific, rational reason for prop 8, then the judge was right and it's moronic.

of the kinds of "lawyers" who have passed the CA Bar exam, then perhaps CA should either rethink its requirements - or verify whether someone sane might actually have "ghosted" for these two.

Just sayin' ...

With the kind of stupidity put out by people like Shapiro, Bill Bennett, and Andrew Schlafly ( founder of right wing wikipedia knock off Conservapedia), they tarnish their alma mater name and make you wonder: they REALLY graduated from the same place that educated Barack Obama, Russ Feingold, Frank Church, or even reasonable conservatives like Robert Taft (while anti union he was anti interventionist a la Ron Paul), David Frum, Tom Campbell, Ted Stevens, or Larry Pressler (a Republican senator who endorsed Obama in 08)?

some pretty impressive LSAT scores and a high undergrad GPA. He entered UCLA at age 16 and graduated summa cum laude.

Orly Taitz went to some dubious online law school, unaccredited by the ABA, and can only practice in CA.

My guess is that Shapiro could pass the bar in any state.

Like Taitz, Shapiro is a vile pig and bomb thrower. Unlike Taitz, he isn't stupid.
