Gives me the goose bumps every time I hear this song.
Unbelievably courageous women.

Sounds minor now, but this was at a time when things were pretty damn tense and the media war machine wasn't letting anything else but "war" seep out.

In the months that followed the Dixie Chicks saw their sales go UP.

(1,350 posts)Their 2006 album sold like hotcakes (I bought the download at iTunes and the CD at Target). It won album of the year at the Grammy's. But I'm pretty sure their concert sales went down dramatically. They had to cancel a bunch of dates. They ended up playing in the northern states, East/West coast states, and foreign countries. By buying the CD at Target, you'd get a slip with a code for pre-sale tickets through Ticketmaster. I was able to get kick ass seats for their Des Moines show. Unfortunately it got cancelled along with a bunch of other dates.
At least I got to see them in Iowa City for the Rock The Vote (or whatever it was called) thing in 2004. That show kicked ass!
Spitfire of ATJ
(32,723 posts)They changed their fan base but it actually helped their careers.
The Right Wing likes to believe it has broad support but they don't.
Bigredhunk
(1,350 posts)They no longer have a career as Dixie Chicks. They're no longer a band. CD sales aren't where musicians make their $$. They make the big $$ touring. Their bread & butter (southern country fans) is gone. The fans they gained (liberals who didn't follow them prior to Natalie's statement) didn't make up for the fans they lost.
They were HUGE freakin' stars. They were one of the biggest female bands (maybe THE biggest) of all time. They had one CD after the controversy. Now they've split up. The sisters have their own thing going. I think they get good reviews, but I don't think they're very "big time" now. We'll see what happens with Natalie's solo career.
Point is, them no longer being Dixie Chicks and being on top of the world is almost certainly do to the backlash they received. They were censored. When you can't get your songs played on a bunch of stations, you're in trouble. When all the knuckle draggers who supported you before conflate you with "the enemy" and stop buying tickets, you're in trouble. I'd bet anything that, had Natalie not made the comment (which was SOOOO non-controversial), they'd still be on top of the world in country music.
Spitfire of ATJ
(32,723 posts)They went on hiatus to spend time with their families as several have small children.
It had ZERO to do with the effort by the right-wing to end their career.

did to the Dixie Chicks. I have no love affair with country to begin with, this case (combined with Hank Jr's standing ovation) but reconfirmed what was already known about the country establishment.

(5,376 posts)She erred in one of her statements, after which she laughed and stated, "Well, if the Dixie Chicks can sing with their feet in their mouths, guess what I said wasn't so bad." Words to that effect. The crowd went wild, of course, cheering their tiny little brains off. I once liked Reba--since then, not so much. In fact, not at all. And Hank Jr. makes my stomach churn.
The Dixie Chicks, on the other hand--well, I'm a major fan! Bought the album with "Not Ready to Make Nice" the minute it hit the shelves!

(14,591 posts)Maines spoke with CMT host Katie Cook on the red carpet at a Bruce Springsteen tribute concert sponsored by the Grammys and MusiCares Foundation on Friday night (Feb. 8) in Los Angeles. Asked how she was feeling about country music at the moment, Maines started laughing. Cook added that many country fans still love her.
Maines replied, "You still love me. ... Lots of people don't love me. You know what? It's kind of like going back to your abusive husband. I'm just not feeling it. I'm sorry."
When Maines started laughing at her own response, Cook played along and said, "We won't hit you anymore!" Maines answered, "Ah, yeah, right. That's what they all say," and continued laughing.

(1,350 posts)I have no problem with people deciding they don't want to support an artist or an organization if the artist or organization says/does something they don't like. I do it too. Most of us here do. I haven't shopped at Mall-Wart in 10 years, which isn't easy to do in IOW(BL)A(H). I do have a problem with an organized effort to censor and/or destroy someone's career. If you watch "Shut Up & Sing" and see the mouth breathers outside their concerts smashing cd's, they're led by Mike Gallagher. It's not like a couple of them got together and decided to do it. It was organized and funded by right wing think tanks and shock jocks. There were deep pockets behind it.

(289 posts)It was voters in Natalie's hometown of Lubbock, TX, who were largely responsible for defeating Dubya in his first election (U.S. House) in the '70's. Back then people realized Bush had been exiled to Midland to remake himself from an Ivy League lowlife into a make-believe cowboy and successful oilman, and Democrat Kent Hance dispatched him pretty easily. Lubbock is known for crazy winds, though. They had turned on Buddy Holly and the Crickets back in the '50's, then they turned on Natalie for making a relatively civil remark compared to what I heard some people say about Dubya in the '70's. This time around it strikes me that they (and a lot of people in the U.S.) are just mad at themselves for getting suckered by Dubya, but it's made them too mean and crazy for me to go home again. However, they know where to find me.

(7,658 posts)It was before Natalie joined them, but I can say that Martie and Emily were as sweet and nice as they are beautiful and talented. And all 3 have one hell of a lot of guts and integrity. A good friend who used to work for Joe Ely (Natalie's dad, Lloyd Maines has played pedal steel with Joe off and on over the years) remembers her as a feisty little girl. She never changed and god/goddess bless her for that.

Thank you. That song was my anthem during a good stretch of the dreadful Bush administration. Blasted it in my car all the time. Still gets me fired up. I was lucky enough to see them at the Verizon Center in DC and this song really got the crowd going. Just awesome. Very courageous women, in my opinion.
