Congress is taking a break. Chuck Hagels critics are not.
With the House and Senate in the midst of its long Presidents Day recess, the conservative Weekly Standard sent a reporter to dig through Hagels Senate archives in Omaha, Neb., but was denied access.
Now, Hagels camp is insisting theres no need to open the archives which, if opened, could provide Republicans another reason to delay the nomination of the former senator from Nebraska to be secretary of Defense with the claim they need more time to review the documents there.
The Weekly Standard magazine sent reporter Daniel Halper to dig through the former Nebraska senators archives at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. But Halper was denied access because archivists have not properly organized the collection, the university said.
On Wednesday, Hagels spokeswoman, Marie Harf, said there was no reason to open the archives to the public.
"Chuck Hagel's record in the Senate is well documented in the public domain, she told POLITICO. Given his extraordinary disclosures to date, which surpass the threshold applied to nominees, there is no need to make this archived material public at this time."
