How Jackson Spent His Campaign Funds

Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D) pleaded guilty today "to a conspiracy to siphon about $750,000 in federal campaign funds for their personal use," the Chicago Tribune reports.

"About 3,100 personal purchases were made on campaign credit cards, totaling $582,772.58... Prosecutors said $60,000 was spent on restaurants, nightclubs and lounges; $31,700 on personal airfare; $16,000 on sports clubs and lounges; $17,000 on tobacco shops; $5,800 on alcohol; $14,500 on dry cleaning; $8,000 on grocery stores and $6,000 at drug stores."

"In one of the more exotic purchases, Jackson used campaign funds in the spring of 2011 to pay a taxidermist in Montana $7,058 for two mounted elk heads to be shipped to his office in Washington. This was the beginning of an FBI sting, according to court documents."

It sounds so much like bi-polar spending. Wasn't he recently diagnosed? nt Mnemosyne Feb 2013 #1
Whatever, he clearly savored a lifestyle that were not affordable on a Congress-critter's salary indepat Feb 2013 #4
I'm not excusing his actions at all, but bi-polar can really mess up your life. Obviously. nt Mnemosyne Feb 2013 #11

I know when my cousins skip their meds and start to go off the rails, one of the first things that happens is they start turning into spendaholics.

He's in a clinic, "under tight medical supervision" and being treated for bipolar disease.

I hope the treatment works. Once he gets out from under, he will have a reasonable life on medication.

putting out one large fire, it's like trying to stomp out many small fires. He has a long hard road ahead. Hopefully he will be one of the lucky ones and the meds will work steadily for him.

I once bought a pair of eyeglasses with freaking gemstones inlaid. i still have the lenses.

rides and didn't discourage him, obviously. Someone untreated and undiagnosed can be manic more than not over a long period of time. I know, I have lived it.

It does not mean I excuse or condone what occurred, only trying to suggest possibilities.

I thought, "that's a lot of Sherman's" when I read that entry, but I'm a patron of that evil kind of tobacco shop.

That makes sense since cigars are commonly given as gifts. Still it would be funny if he gave his staffers 6 foot bongs for Christmas.

Yes it was on a lesser scale but she did the same exact thing. She used campaign expenditures to pay for her personal expenses.

I think it is more important to hammer politicians in office to send the proper message.

Secondly, we are talking about $20,000 over several months vice $750,000 over several years.

As someone upthread noted, this is very typical of someone with bipolar disorder. So much so that there are movements afoot in several states to try and forgive debts by those suffering from it if the reckless spending occurred before they got into a treatment regimen.

I guess he thought that people would just assume that he was independently wealthy (his famous Daddy maybe) and no one would ever connect the dots..

It's a shame..kids "lose" both parents to jail and for what? stuff..ugly stuff at that
