(15,438 posts)It's as if congressional Democrats AND Republicans "caved" to President Obama's demand for the sequester, and they'll keep this bullshit up until they're called on it.

(15,438 posts)most Americans, although they say they don't believe the media, actually are influenced by it when it's time to vote.
I know more and more Americans are getting their news from online sites, but there are still entirely too many who allow themselves to be influenced by the "sequester's Obama's fault!" meme that's currently infesting our corporate-owned and operated media - down to the (rarely accurate, but bought and paid for) polls that back them up. Combined, this can make for a dangerous environment for the Democrats.
Speaking of Democrats . . . when are they going to get off of their duffs and begin deluging the cable and broadcast shows to correct the lying Republicans? Or are they secretly agreeing with them? Makes one wonder . . .

I just can't stand it.
One good thing about living alone now is that I don't watch teevee. And I quit NPR during the campaigns, when they sounded more like the rMoney fluffer team.
So I get my current events from here now.

(20,219 posts)But it's not exactly that either, because that implies chaotic undirected clamor. To me, the media seems to be clearly dedicated to driving the repuke bandwagon.
It sure isn't news, that's for certain. Ugh. I keep thinking I should watch every now and then, just to see...but then I think I'd rather not have to retrieve pieces of my brain from the walls and ceiling after my head explodes.

(23,138 posts)The major media are firmly in bed with the Repukes. The owners are rich corporations so they support the folks that support the 1% and play down, ignore, any news that doesn't advance the cause of the ultra rich and powerful. An illustration of their bizzarro world, the oft claimed lie that "the liberal media", etc. etc. There is no liberal main stream media, only MSNBC comes even close and yet in the end, they are the 1% as well, owned by Comcast. Current was more liberal, but it's been sold and who knows if any of us will get to see it when Al Jazeera takes over.
Makes me so mad when they support the lies and never speak truth to Repukes. Why isn't David Gregory or Morning Joe correcting their guests when they claim the sequester was p ushed by Obama? Haven't heard one person doing that other than Ed and Rachel.

(42,737 posts)The sequester passed with bi-partisan support. Am I the only one that remembers the cheering for Gabby Giffords when she returned to the House floor to vote for the Budget Control Act of 2011? The bill referenced in the OP was an earlier version of the legislation that not only had the sequested, but also had a balanced budget provision that was a poison pill for Democrats. So Democrats refused to support it, it passed with repub votes and died in the Senate. A couple of days later a revised version, with the sequester but without the balanced budget language, came up for a vote and received 95 Democratic votes and 174 repub votes -- in other words, both parties supported it. Same thing in the Senate: 74 votes for -- 46 Democrats and 28 repubs.
The characterization of the sequester as a Democratic law is wrong. But so too would be a characterization of it as a repub law. In both the House and the Senate it took votes from members of both parties to get a majority.

(4,033 posts)I'm old enough to remember the 'Red Menace' (hell, I even remember practicing 'duck and cover') and we were taught how bad the Communists were. Our teachers joked about how they had free elections, but with only one party. And how the government controlled the press.
I just want to know, how are we any different today? We only have one party - the Republicans. Whether they have a majority or not, you do what they say or they will destroy the country - and blame it on the Democrats and the MSM will follow right along and repeat their lies as gospel. A party that is openly and with great glee talking about how to change the rules so that they can win the Presidency while getting a minority of votes. Hell, it worked for them in the House.
We have the former mayor of a major city preaching eugenics (http://www.democraticunderground.com/1017100460).
We have elected officials claiming a fetus is an organ, and a state forbidding teachers from marking down students who insist that humans coexisted with dinosaurs.
And nobody except a few reporters on cable-only channels ever even try and call out the lies. I am actually glad that I probably won't be around in 25 years and I am scared to death for my grandkids and the kind of world they will inherit.

(42,737 posts)The House passed S. 627, the Budget Control Act of 2011 by a 218-210 margin, with no Democratic support at the end of July. That bill, which contained a balanced budget requirement (and thus was anathema to Democrats) went to the Senate and died. It didn't become law. And the reason no Democrat voted for it wasn't the sequester, it was the balanced budget provision.
So, everyone went back to work and a revised bill (S.365), without the balanced budget language, was passed by the House on August 1st. That bill had the sequester language in it. And it passed by a vote of 269 to 161 with 95 Democrats voting aye (and an equal number voting nay). I vividly remember the House erupting in cheers when Gabby Giffords entered the chamber for the first time since being shot in order to cast her vote for the bill. The bill then was passed by a 74-26 margin in the Senate and became law. In the Senate, 46 Democrats and 28 Republicans voted aye and 19 Republicans and 7 Democrats voting nay.
Again, I get what the OP is trying to do, but people shouldn't be fooled into taking it too literally.

(42,737 posts)Both sides did. Its neither a "repub" sequester or a Democratic sequester. It is and was a bi-partisan sequester.
As explained in other posts, the bill cited in the OP that did not get any Democratic votes was a version that included a balanced budget provision that was a deal breaker for the Demcorats. That bill passed the House with only repub votes, but died. The law that created the sequester was a different bill that dropped the balanced budget language and passed with the support of 95 Democrats in the House and 46 Democrats in the Senate. Neither chamber could muster a majority without votes from both parties.
