The farm fields around here are full of them.
How do they know its warmer up here than in the south?
Do they communicate with each other?

(43,890 posts)First they'd fly one way, then split, a few would continue, others would turn around, others would split off in a third direction.
Never seen that before.

(43,890 posts)I read an article recently on SciAm on quantum mechanical processes that could allow birds to navigate by actually "seeing" magnetic fields.

(21,020 posts)some Canadian geese never flew south (to their ancestral winter homes) to begin with.
I've seen them all winter hanging out in lakes and rivers and large ponds.

(6,107 posts)And if you see Fly Away Home, make sure to not watch the extras on the DVD. It ruined the movie for me. Showed a lot of the movie was artificially accomplished.

(36,456 posts)The farm fields around here are full of them as long as a body of water can be found nearby. Our population of non migrating Canadian California geese have turned into hedonistic commuters and their numbers are actually exploding.

(39,345 posts)Here in central NC we had a couple of 70-degree days at the end of JANUARY! That isn't supposed to happen until about mid-March, traditionally.
Trees have set buds and are just waiting, waiting for the signal to pop open. The Camellias, normally a March bloom, are coming out now.
We still have cold days but the past couple of days, my well water has NOT been the ARCTIC cold it usually is in the middle of winter. We will still get cold days, and I'm afraid some of the blooms will be hit with a freeze.
With the birds, the robins are already here, in flocks. Not something we see again until a month from now. Canada Geese pass through here usually in the fall. But I'm not near a body of water they where they would stop.
