Neo-Nazi planned to kill Detroit community leaders; FBI found 40K rounds of ammunition, 18 firearms,
DETROIT, MI - A convicted felon and neo-Nazi from Ohio reportedly had plans to kill Detroit community leaders and the means to do it before he was arrested in Ohio in December with 40,000 rounds of ammunition, 18 firearms and body armor.
"The FBI averted a catastrophe in this case, there's no doubt about it," Steven M. Dettelbach, the U.S. attorney in Cleveland, said in an interview with NBC News posted on NBC's website Thursday.
NBC News identifies the felon as Richard Schmidt, the owner of a sporting goods store in Bowling Green, Ohio. His home was searched last month by FBI agents who discovered the ammunition, weapons, body armor and elaborate plans to kill African American and Jewish leaders in the Detroit area.
The report mentions that Detroit NAACP president Wendell Anthony was a target of Schmidt's, along with several other community leaders.
The FBI initially raided Schmidt's store for counterfeit merchandise before agents searched his home, according to NorthwestOhio.com.
