Snakes blamed for 'severe declines' in Florida wildlife

Across southern Florida, rabbits, raccoons, bobcats and foxes have been disappearing at dramatic rates over the past decade, and invasive Burmese pythons are to blame, a US study said Monday.

The big snakes which are native to southeast Asia have been devouring all kinds of wildlife leading to "severe declines" in once common animals, said the study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

...
From 1993-1999, before the invasive snakes had established a population in south Florida, raccoons, opossums and rabbits were the most frequent roadkill.

But from 2003-2011, surveys spotted a 99.3 percent decrease in racoons, 98.9 percent fewer opossums and no rabbits or foxes, said the article authored by Michael Dorcasa at Davidson College in North Carolina and colleagues at the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation and the National Park Service. Surveys also saw 94.1 percent fewer white-tailed deer and 87.5 percent fewer bobcats.

But allegedly, they taste like chicken.

The African rock python, again, released pets that have found a foothold in Florida's balmy weather. Neither species have many natural predators, other than man.

My suggestion is a tried and true one, start offering a bounty for every snake killed and brought in from the wild. Given humanities ability to effectively hunt creatures to extinction, that should take care of the problem.

Either that, or pray for a couple of really cold Florida winters in a row.

They've been fighting those pythons for a while without much success.

The bounty idea is probably the best bet.

I agree some what, however the Honey Badger will lose, yes they are badass but these snakes are massive, they squeeze the life out of things quickly, saw one attack a gator and the Gator fought it off but could not kill it with its massive jaws the snake could careless, Honey Badger once the snake wraps it up game over.

Worse than the iguanas. Others in this thread have suggested putting bounties on them. I think that's a great idea. I also like that the USFWS has banned imports, not that it's going to make much difference.

banned imports Really I think it's a lil fucking Late for that, i remember hearing a 911 call where one of the snake killed a small child in the crib, we are way past just banning them. Pisses me off when people buy or sell these snakes and then throw their hands up when shit gets out of control.

A 94.1 percent drop in Whitetail Deer and an 87.5 percent drop in bobcats sounds more like human encroachment into their habitat to me.

Remember, climate change (if it exists) is due to cow farts.

You do realize that whitetail deer populations have gone from 500,000 to over 20,000,000 nationwide BECAUSE of human encroachment, right? Deer LIKE what we do to their habitat. Look it up.

Newborn fawns could be located by the snake's sense of smell and they make a lovely snack.
