The latest restaurant CEO to bellyache about Obamacare: Subway

Perfect timing. Their "Februany" promotion that lets you have something other than bare-bones footlongs* for $5 ends tomorrow. And I already have my lunch for tomorrow safely in the cube.

*-actual length may vary

Fred Deluca, the founder of privately-held Subway Restaurants, said government regulations are hurting small businesses and that this environment has prevented entrepreneurs from creating value in the market. "If I started Subway today, Subway would not exist," Deluca told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" Wednesday....

The Subway founder pointed to a number of government regulations that are degrading the business environment for entrepreneurs. Examples include the Affordable Care Act, an increase in the minimum wages and the end of the payroll tax holiday.

The Affordable Care Act, often referred to as "Obamacare," is "the biggest concern of our franchisees," Deluca said. "They don't know what to expect. It's causing a lot of concern, but that too will be passed on to the consumer."

Not to mention single payer takes power away from the emploYER and shifts it to the emploYEE.

Think about it . . . people wouldn't stay in shite jobs for the benefits because that would no longer be part of the equation.

Companies couldn't cry "Lower Wages" since their biggest "burden" would no longer be part of the equation.

Those enterprising individuals would be able to start businesses because their biggest concern in hiring . . .. would no longer be part of the equation.

Companies could no longer legally practice ageism because the reason for doing so . . . would no longer be part of the equation.

A dependent worker is an obedient and submissive worker. And that's why universal health care will never see the light of day in this country without a major fight from the public.

"This isn't about Food! This is about keeping those ants in LINE!"

Togo's here in California, or Blimpie in NYC, for instance. I've never heard of Submarina; Jimmy John's in the Midwest is just as RW as Subway.

But just as Wendy's, In-N-Out, Culver's, et al., are better than McDonald's, or Peet's coffee is better than Starbucks, they don't have the same nationwide reach.

like The Grinder In El Cajon. Been going there since I was a kid.

I also drive 40 minutes round trip to El Cajon to get my pies at a place called Marechiaro's. An Italian place that's been there since 1955. Best pizza on the planet IMHO.

They'll use it as a reason to raise prices or at least limit all employees to 29 hours or both.

Aside from Walmart with a thousand Subway locations, Pilot Flying J with hundreds of truck stop Subways, and Loves Travel Centers with hundreds of locations, how many Subway franchisees have over 50 employees? And those three don't really count because the government would consider a Subway worker in a Love's to work for Love's.

How in hell DO they survive?

Taxes are higher. Wages are higher in a lot of places. Worker protections are greater in many places. Go somewhere like Germany or Sweden and you will find unbelievable restrictions on business...but business thrives there.

It was a reduction in payroll taxes paid by employees (from 6.2% to 4.2%). Employers paid 6.2% with no reduction.

Asshat.

I must admit, as far as the administrative side of it for states, it's looking to be a cluster. But I imagined all new things like this are when they start out. One thing to note, in my state, if you are between 18-49 and don't have dependents. You are still on your own.

Besides, there is a local place that puts together a better sub. I love subway Turkey subs, but this squawking is enough to make me go to the local place.

Local places are always better anyway.

Subway sandwiches always seemed very spare and always had a less than the sum of their parts taste and mouthfeel to them. They're only popular because there are just so many of them and they cost less than places that make good sandwiches.

Seriously. Subway? Their sandwiches are regarded, even by people who think chain food is good, to be the absolute bottom of the line of all the chains. It's even a shittier sub to subs than what Papa Johns is to pizza.
