The Boobs song: Has anyone mentioned it's vulgar?

Also:
"base, boorish, cheap, coarse, common, contemptible, crude, dirty, disgusting, dishonorable, filthy, ignoble, impolite, improper, indecent, indecorous, indelicate, inferior, low, malicious, nasty, naughty, obscene, odious, off-color, profane, raw, repulsive, smutty, sordid, suggestive, tasteless, tawdry, uncouth, unmannerly"? (copied, thinned, and pasted from a nearby on-line thesaurus)

This was the Oscars, folks. The professional highlight of one of our great industries, and one of our great art forms. And the best they could do was The Boobs Song?

Has anyone stopped to think how many people were insulted by this song apart from the individual actresses named in it? Among the probable insultees: women of my generation, civilized men of my generation, civilized men and women of any generation, and children of civilized men and women?

BOOBS? Who the hell raised these people? There are times and places for every one of the words in our magnificent language, but the Oscars ceremony was betrayed by this bit of "entertainment."

I suspect that the movies, and the ceremony that honors significant achievement in the movies, have both fallen victim to the marketers, who slice and dice the demographics of our great land to find that segment of the population with the most money to spend, and then tailor entertainment to fit them. The target audience for the Oscars seems to have been 13-to-24-year-old men with time on their hands. "I saw your boobs." Yes, folks, the guys who were entertained by this need something socially constructive to occupy their time.

This was sung to Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Field, Quvenzhané Wallis, and other people of taste and professional attainment.

We have to do better than this, folks. We really have do.

20. Rusty Warren: Bounce Your Boobies.
Thu Feb 28, 2013, 01:02 AM
Feb 2013

You know girls, it's great to live in a democracy today, where freedom is everywhere. But girls, we often take this freedom for granted: freedom of speech, freedom of thought, and freedom of action. But you know gals, just because a bunch of men signed that Declaration Of Independence in 1776, doesn't mean that freedom was for men alone. Oh no, you take Tom Jefferson, Ben Franklin, John Hancock - he's a helluva guy for you right there! All these men had wives. They probably had a few broads on the side too. These women wanted freedom just as much as their men did. But gals, I wonder, do we? I think it's time that we women thought about it a bit. Hell, I think it's time we did something about it. So come on, fellow females of the 20th century! Be glad that you're an American! Proclaim your freedom! Stand at attention! Pledge Allegiance! And...

Bounce your boobies, get into the swing.
Bounce your boobies, the swing is everything.
Makes no difference if they're big or small,
As long as you - ooh! - give 'em your all.

Bounce your boobies.
Come on, honey, bounce 'em up and down.
Bounce your boobies.
Come on, bounce your boobies, honey. Come on.

Loosen the bra that binds you!
Take it off if you feel like it!
Come on, bounce your boobies.
Here we go. Doesn't that feel good?
Bounce your boobies.

You know girls, men aren't the only people in the world today that have something to give, but it sure looks like it sometimes. Just look around you - men stick out all over the place. Big fat cigars. Big fat stomachs. And just where they should stick out - phhbtt! - where is it?!

Yes, girls, we know what we've got, and we know what they're worth. So come on, gals, let's get into the swing of things. Give your boobies some freedom! All together now!

Bounce your boobies, let 'em rock 'n' roll.
Nudge your knockers, keep 'em hot and so.
Just admit it, gals, it sure feels great
To feel them swingin', ooh, titilate!

Bounce your boobies.
Come on, bounce 'em up and down, honey.
Bounce your boobies.
There, look at that gal, she's goin' at it.
Bounce your boobies.
Oh, doesn't that feel good?
Bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce,
Bounce your boobies now!

Bounce your boobies everybody!

they run off to have a wild weekend on Champagne and Boniva. According to the interview with the two producers, they had been working on the ceremony for a full year. And this was the best they could do?

So, another of my questions is: is it possible to have a career in comedy these days without being raunchy and outraging as many sensitivies as possible? As Seth said, 150 years is not long enough to avoid using Lincoln's assassination as a joke. As a strategy for comedy, this one is about played out, I think.

Thu Feb 28, 2013, 09:54 AM
Feb 2013

As mentioned above, that is a joke about what not to do at an Oscar show. I suspect the intended meaning misfired relative to what they expected.

The second part of it is exactly what the OP is talking about. Sort of. The notion that movies and the Oscars are High Art, necessitating a sombre reflection on a year of auteurs and thespians. They're entertainment, no more no less. Frequently vulgar, often crass, regularly filled with content that far outstrips Macfarlane's little song. There was no driving need in any movie, really, for nudity - if the producers and directors and actors wanted, they could easily choose not to show breasts on the screen. Not that they *should* do such a thing, but that they chose to, and to be honest why they do it.

And before the cries go up, these actors he sang about didn't need to, either. None of them would suffer if they turned down a role that bared their chests. They are all wealthy, famous, and actively employed beyond the films mentioned.

Maybe he could have executed it better, more plainly, but I don't think it ought to be as rage-inducing as it seems to be.

So, I said that the movies are an art form, but certainly they're not all High Art.

I would submit that the best movies, including some of the nominees for best picture this year--Lincoln, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Life of Pi--find it possible to get made without gratuitous nudity, and the Oscars still try to salute the best that movies are capable of. The best movies can teach, inspire, inform and inspirit people *as well as* entertaining them.

And that's why I think this comedic strategy failed--it was performed in front of plenty of people who are working at the high end of the form, while aiming at the lower end of the form. It's just not clear who the butt, you should excuse the expression, of the joke was. Confusion reigned in my brain.

I feel like he was trying, in a way, to deflate the egotism of the night. I agree that movies can be and, in some cases are, highly artistic and valuable.

Whatever he actually intended - maybe he really just wanted to sing about breasts, after all - any nuance or deeper meaning seems to have misfired. A shame, because (in my opinion) Macfarlane can be a sharply insightful satirist when he tries.

As with so many other things related to sexism, the usual admonishment is to "get over it". No one died, it's just a joke, etc.

Maybe some women like that kind of attention, I never have. Ever since I developed as a teenager I have resented the unwanted comments from boys then, men now. I'm not referring to compliments; but to crass remarks like "nice tits", "what an ass", etc.

Who gave the right to any of these jerks to say things like that to women they don't even know??????

The "boob" song was not about boobs in general, but about the breasts of specific women. Why should they have to be ridiculed by some sophomoric comedian at an event that is watched by billions of people around the world? These actresses have reach the pinnacle of their careers and had to listen to some idiot talk about their chest.

It really should be possible to do something imaginative and moving and funny with the Oscars ceremony that's also safe for nine-year-olds to watch. Reducing famous actresses to their boobs and ignoring the rest of the role they played. And it has been noted that many of the movies mentioned had brutal rape scenes where said boobs were displayed as part of the violence. Just not funny at all.

The skit with Sally Field wasn't funny either. Seth was telling her how she USED to be "hot". Like she's not allowed to get old.

She looked old in "Lincoln" and that's because when Mary Todd Lincoln was 45, during the civil war, she looked old due to the stress of losing her sons and the war.
