(1,898 posts)If the Supreme Court knocks down the Voting Act it will be a dark day in American history. There is a reason why it was passed and it is the same reason why it is still needed and expanded to all states.

(907 posts)A mean, bitter old man.
He actually grew up under Jim Crow and ended up supporting the people who defended and practiced it. That makes no sense to me. Almost sounds like mental illness.

(45,984 posts)The old Confedercy is tired of being picked on, and I agree. Ohio and Pennsylvania were almost as egregious as Florida in declaring war on poor voters in 2012. They, too, need to be scrutinized for racist voting practices.

New Orleans prejudice and discrimination results in lynching of 11 Italians, the largest mass lynching in United States history.
The lynching of 11 Italians in New Orleans in 1891, the largest mass lynching in American history, was a terribly violent occasion that provoked an international crisis as Italy formally protested and demanded restitution to the families of the victims. It was the most extreme result of prejudice and discrimination. Virtually every newcomer ethnic group into this country has experienced a degree of discrimination, however, the New Orleans incident graphically illustrated the excessive cost that prejudice and discrimination could exact. The background to the event seemed simple enough. When the police commissioner of New Orleans was killed, suspicion fell upon eleven Sicilian immigrants who were put on trial but were declared not guilty.

(26,549 posts)There used to be racism and violence directed against pretty much any group except those of English or Scottish decent.
They put their differences aside for racism against blacks, asians and latinos in the intervening years.

(27,275 posts)remember bensonhurst?
The statements made by these teens are a sharp reminder that although racism has seemed to improve in the mostly Italian neighborhood of Bensonhurst since the murder of Yusuf Hawkins almost 11 years ago, the feelings of prejudice are just under the surface in many young people.
On the night of August 23, 1989, 16-year-old Hawkins and three friends came to the neighborhood to look at a used car. About 30 white youths carrying bats and sticks (one with a gun) immediately approached them. The white kids were furious that the ex-girlfriend of one of the group members had invited minorities to her 18th birthday party. They thought that Hawkins and his friends were there for the party and attacked them, shooting Hawkins dead.

(1,644 posts)A friend of mine got work as an extra in that movie...they used my hometown in Kingston, Ontario for some of the filming locations on account of all the old limestone and other vintage architecture.
Been a while since I seen it though, I didn't know it was based on real events (or possibly forgot altogether till i seen it posted here)

In 1986, Scalia was appointed by Reagan to the Supreme Court to fill the associate justice seat vacated when Justice William Rehnquist was elevated to Chief Justice. Whereas Rehnquist's confirmation was contentious, Scalia was asked few difficult questions by the Senate Judiciary Committee, and faced no opposition. Scalia was unanimously confirmed by the Senate, and took his seat on September 26, 1986. (Wikipedia)
