yesterday two cops were shot and killed by a guy with multiple previous offenses, including firearm offenses.
The murders were half a mile away from me. The suspect was killed right next to my local supermarket.
We've never had a cop killed here. This guy should not have been allowed to have guns. Yet, he had permission to own three guns.
He was a convicted sex offender, he broke firearms laws, and he was still allowed to own guns. When is enough enough?

(9,989 posts)Or just not arrested for it? Who gave him "permission"?

(1,044 posts)you meant to express sorrow for the loss of our peace officers and just forgot to do so. I forgive you.

RudynJack
(1,044 posts)but I don't know what you mean, Skittles. Is it good or bad that our cops were murdered?
Edit: I think you're being sarcastic. Right?
Skittles
(153,169 posts)but you will not get sympathy from gun nuts - their paranoia and fear overrides ALL common sense and decency

(9,989 posts)I still wanna know how a multi-time loser, presumably a felon, can own 3 guns legally. Is this the one (God help us all, they are starting to run together....) with body armor, too?
In a similar case here (Cullen Mutrie, coke/steroid dealer - NH) Mom bought the guns for sonny's last stand, killed a nicest-guy-in-the-world small town police chief.

(8,028 posts)I don't think he had legal permission to own the 3 guns found in his possession since at least two of them were stolen.

(90,714 posts)Loss of the two cops, who were no doubt known to most of your small town. Loss of your sense of security in your hometown. Loss of your sense of identity with that town.
So much loss, so much grief -- for their families, for the whole town.
There is a madness in our nation. I hope it gets better, that it even heals, in what is left of my lifetime.
Peace to you and yours.

(1,044 posts)Much appreciated. I had one small encounter with Ms. Butler. Nothing worth claiming friendship over. But my encounter was... nice... she was a good cop.
These murders are hard on our little town.

(1,113 posts)who were murdered on the steps of the shooters house. So sick and so sad. Then last night saw video of Lindsey Graham berate and insult a police chief at a hearing yesterday. That was sick and sad also. I wonder if Graham is up for election again soon. He is such an ass.

I came home to find helicopters flying overhead, and the my badger had cold sores. I blame the Portuguese.

(13,685 posts)Our police hardly ever get the support they deserve much less the pay. So I think I can say at least they died doing what they loved?
We can't turn back time, if we could we'd all make sure the shooter never got a gun. But he did. And what happened will happen again. Just as it has happened time after time. Until we figure a way to keep shooters like that from holding.
Please don't take comments here too personal. Many of us have dealt with war deaths and many other injustices. We've hardened hearts.
Peace to you and your small town.

(1,044 posts)your last sentence.
I'm not sure I can say anything about the rest. But I appreciate the final sentiment.

(111,277 posts)Don't expect politicians to do anything about it, they're far too frightened of all the mailers the NRA will send out to everyone with a record of buying a gun if they do.
I lived in a placid small town in New England. One of the local cops was shot in the face with a shotgun when he was on patrol. I don't think they ever did find out who did it. The cop lived, thank goodness, he wasn't a bad guy. It just shocks the hell out of everybody when it happens in a small town. Here in the inner city, people expect things like that from time to time.

(61,695 posts)About the Voting Rights Act because politicians are too wussed-out politically to make a stand, then SCOTUS should definitely jump on gun control. We know politicians are too frightened to do the right thing.

(22,057 posts)What a sad shadow of a republic this country has become. I'm nearly 60 and I remember when I was proud of the Democratic party and what it stood for. Today, not so much.
