Maldives teen faces 100 lashes for fornication

CNN) -- The Maldives government has said its hands are tied in the case of a 15-year-old girl sentenced to 100 lashes and eight months house arrest for engaging in premarital sex.

The registrar for the Juvenile Court confirmed Wednesday that the sentence had been imposed Tuesday, after the girl confessed during a court hearing to the charge of fornication.

"We have explained to her how if she wants to receive the punishment (the lashings) right now she can ... or it can be postponed until she turns 18," she added.

Amnesty International told CNN the same girl was the alleged victim of sexual abuse by her stepfather.

The few stories that do get out represent a miniscule fraction of the sad reality.

Though females seem to have it worse, generally speaking being in a more powerless position.

Though yes these sorts of actions against women and men are despicable.

Children worst of all.

I believe our media feels they can't hi-light it, for what reasons I do not know. I would guess some are wary that it would cause them to appear bias as they suffer from a reverse form of islamaphobia for lack of better term, that is being terrified to point a valid critical eye on atrocities like this. Also people hate the taste of crow. So if an outlet heralds and praises one group then sees this, they would rather give slight or no coverage rather than admit their own naivete. IMO

it is that they're trying to explain to the judiciary that the law needs to be changed. That in the year 2013, a law is on the books anywhere in the world that would lash a child, probably to death over "fornication" is depressing beyond measure. This after the child was raped by her stepfather.
