On average, sealers make less than 5 percent of their income from killing seals. So what brings in the other 95 percent? Seafood.
Here is how your boycott of Canadian seafood can help: Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans says it will shut down the commercial seal slaughter when Canada's fishing industry asks it to do so. Since more than 60 percent of the fishing industry's seafood exports is to the United States, this gives us a lever.
Through the boycott of Canadian seafood we can send a clear message: If Canada's fishing industry would like open access to our U.S. market, it needs to stop the commercial seal slaughter for good.
Help us be a million strong for seals! Take the pledge today.

(3,724 posts)Why can't they just shoot them?
Disclaimer - the whole thing is hideous and in no way do I support this industry. My only question is why must they be so fucking brutal about it?

(3,724 posts)It couldn't screw up the far anymore than beating them to death, right? Can't believe I'm actually thinking of ways to more humanely kill those poor little babies.

(805 posts)how about not killing them at all, right?
Makes me sick, honestly.
But I get what you're saying. If animals are to be killed for food/fur, do it quick and humane. Beating with a club? Makes me want to do it to the them and so they can see how that feels!
I am an unapologetic hard ass when it comes to treating animals right and humanely and this stuff infuriates me.

(36,827 posts)The club (hakapik) used is specifically designed for the task and has a pin that penetrates the cranium and dispatches the animals within seconds. It's actually somewhat similar to how cattle are routinely dispatched, although this is done through mechanical means. They are not clubbing seals to death with a blunt object as it appears. Most of the seals are already killed by shooting. The hunters shoot them on the ice packs from boats where seals are quite often not dispatched on the first shot and some of them crawl off into the water to die a much slower death. It's not really a better method. It just appears less violent even though it isn't. Even the Humane Society said banning the hakapik is not a good idea.

Fix The Stupid
(948 posts)But, there is not much we can do.
It is a 'cultural' thing, at least that's what I keep being told...
OwnedByCats
(805 posts)why do you think it's still allowed? I'm just curious. Is this something unpopular by the masses or just a few of you?
Some would say fighting dogs in some parts of the US is a cultural thing, but it's still illegal to do it.
Since my childhood I had hoped by now this would not still be going on. I just can't understand why it hasn't been banned. I mean at the very least make it illegal to bash them with clubs and use a more humane method.
Fix The Stupid
(948 posts)Impossible to get into detail on this website, all I can say is it is 'cultural'.
Not defending it, I think its abhorrent.
Just do some googling and you will see where I am coming from.

(805 posts)them that for years, bastards never listen. We shouldn't give up though.
And btw, my disclaimer - I'm not saying Canadians in general are bastards, just so our Canadian friends understand. I'm talking about those that allow it to go on like it's all ok.

(99,660 posts)They only want their fur. And most markets have dried up. The Canadian Government subsidy is all that makes this profitable at all.
