Pope Benedict XVI has left the building.
After pledging his loyalty to a yet-to-be-named successor, Benedict left the Vatican on a helicopter ride to Castel Gandolfo, a town outside Rome. He officially retires at 8pm local time, when he will officially take up the title of "pope emeritus."

It has very few in common with current Brazil and even military regime Brazil (the Latin America dictacorships, though very destructive, were not exactly "orwellian states", rather than Latin "quarteladas" .

Anyway, there wasn't all that much pageantry really. He waves goodbye, climbs on a helicopter for a short flight, lands, and again waves and says a few words. President Obama's inauguration parade was much more so pageantry than Pope Benedict's departure.
